have been a low grade photo hobbyist since high school, never could afford decent gear, my wife got me a d3200 couple years ago and have been hitting the books and have shoot couple thousand photos {nothing spectacular} and learning this equipment, and like all men {and, yes some women} are like kids in a candy store!! always looking and hoping to step up, so I was looking at the d7100 and the d800/d800e, the d7100 because the plugs are the same as d3200, in my quest to figure out how I could do this with out dropping another fortune, I found that I had bought fx glass, that works on the dx format af-s 28-300mm and the af-s 18-85mm ,also an fx formatted glass, after finding that out I decided to go d800.
recently I has a small windfall of cash and got me a d800 , I will have to let you hoggers know, for me, it is like going from a comet to a bmw!!! I am not bragging just proud!!
SSOOOO, when I figure out how to turn it on!! and set it!!! will post some pics, this site has helped a lot in my decision , thanks to all with input

Sometimes it takes a bit of work to figure a way to justify what we want to buy, but we always come through. Congratulations on your decision. I know you'll love it. Don't hesitate to post questions, because I'm sure you'll have some.,

Have fun with it! Feel free to ask questions if you aren't sure about anything with it.

rhb...I have the same combination, the D800 with the 28-300mm, and I have enjoyed it quite a bit. I have a nice tripod but haven't really used it yet but intend to. Did you keep you D3200? If so, you can use it as a second camera. I have a Tamron 10-24mm wide angle on my D7000, which means I have everything covered from wide angle up to 300mm in two cameras. It can get old when you're on vacation and try to constantly switch back and forth.

I really don't want this to be "disagree with SteveR" day, I really like him. :-)

If you are taking an ultra wide angle shot of a spectacular landscape, given the choice of the D3200 or the D800, which would you use?

somehow I remember that the d3200 was better for that, BUT I could not tell you educationally, why!!!! I think it has to so with ratios!! but am guessing! enlighten me!!!!

Actually Steve, you have 15-450mm covered without even considering the D800.

The conventional wisdom is that the DX camera is better for the telephoto end, because the 1.5x crop factor gives more "reach". (I believe this is a myth, but that's a separate post.) For wide angle, the crop factor is not an advantage, because the goal is to get the widest shot possible, not one which is cropped.

The "use DX for reach' idea expects that the two sensors are of comparable quality. I know the D3200 is a really good camera (I helped two friends select the D3100), but I don't think the D3200 sensor is comparable to the D800 sensor. Looking at the DxOMark scores with a common lens, the Tokina AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 DX, the D3200 gets a 16 while the D800 gets a 24. The Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC also gets a 16. Most of the time when we shoot with an ultra wide angle lens, we want the best image to get a strong photo, often to print panoramic images. I think the Tokina with the D800 would give the better results than the D3200.

I must admit I have never heard that "rule" before. Glad that style works for you...

I have the D800 after getting it when I had my D700. It is my 'baby'. Will be yours too. ENJOY!!!
