I own the Canon 70-200 f/4 IS, but would like to have that extra stop. Canon's II or III versions of the 2.8 are a little above my spending limit, so I've been considering the Tamron G2. I'd like to hear some opinions on my thinking. Going from a Canon f/4 to the Tamron 2.8 G2, would admittedly be a step down in build quality, but what of image quality? Should I be content with the f/4 Canon? Any opinions will be appreciated.

By all means, get the Tamron. I use mine on a Nikon D500 to get some excellent baseball pictures. Images of the outfielders 400 feet away are tack sharp. It's my most used lens for sports.

Did Ansel have a co-author for his three books, The Print, The Negative and The Camera?

The first page of "The Negative" published in 1981 says, "Ansel Adams with the collaboration of Robert Baker".

I’ve used Lightroom for years and am happy with it. I keep all my pictures on an external hard drive and save them by year, shoot name and have a sub folder named in process. After a recent update, I seem to have lost a lot of pictures from my Lightroom catalog. They are there on the hard drive, but not in Light room. I try to reimport them and Lightroom says there are no files found. It’s not all files, just some. I’ve spent I don’t know how much time trying to find a setting or something that has changed since the update with no luck. I’ve even stated over with a few files on a new external drive all with the Sam result. Any suggestions?

For one thing you are not consistent in naming files and/or folders. In one case you will have 2019_xxx and in another 2019-xxx. A dash is not the same as an underscore. Maybe that has something to do with it. You're search key is just the wrong one???

Need to pick Hoggers' brains. My old Epson colour printer has just died, it only lasted 20 years. Now need a new colour printer for photographs, possible a reasonably priced Canon.

Grateful thanks for any recommendations and/or of experience of using Canon printers.

Well, I have to recommend the Canon Pro-100. It's price is reasonable and usually comes with a coupon for money off (rebate). I got one about 2 years ago. I think the price was about $350 with $200 off. Also got a pack of 13" x 19" paper. What a deal!

I do not do a lot of printing. I have had it sit idle for 3-4 months without clogging. I couldn't be happier with it.

I have a friend who has asked me to frame several images of doorways, windows, and streets that I have taken to hang in a long office hallway. I want to enlarge them to 11x14 or 16x20 and then matt and frame them.

I plan to upload them to Costco or Amazon Prime for printing. When I experiment and upload a few of my images on these sites, I do not like they way they crop the images at the 16x20 size and I cannot seem to move the crop tool slightly right or left to get it right. Is this common for these kinds of printing services?

Also, if I am using a crop sensor camera (Nikon d7500) and my intent is to shoot images that will be enlarged to 11x14 or larger, should I change the aspect ratio?
My camera is set to 3:2 currently.

I am not a professional....just a hobbyist who doesn’t often print my photos for hanging. Any constructive suggestions will be greatly appreciated. TIA

You need to learn how to RESIZE the document. Use BICUBIC for that. Resize to 11" x 14" or 16" x 20". Then make sure you check print preview to see how the document will print. At least that's what I do in Affinity with my Canon Pro-100 printer. I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but "resize document" is the way to go.

True. The word five is an error, too.

All I've seen about Affinity here on a search are relatively old posts.
I have Photoshop, but a friend in France is asking for alternatives.
Anyone using Affinity here?
Anyone using Affinity who is has experience with Photoshop ?

Thanks!

(Yes, I know about GIMP.)

Tried Photoshop and Lightroom for over a year and it just seemed I was pretty much at a stand still.
Got Affinity and the workbook about a year ago and now I'm in the JET age. It is so much easier to learn that Photoshop. With the workbook and all the videos, how could you not learn. I'm really glad I went to Affinity Photo.

I just wanna see some of your photos! I'm a beginner at photography, but it's fun and i've taken a few good pics.

I don't post much, but I'm pretty proud of this one. For a McDonald's ad, it wouldn't be good enough. I don't think it's bad for the first time...

Some of you may remember that some time ago I was asking about teleconverters on a Nikon 75-300.
I thank you all for the advice given and as most of you suggested I am moving on from that.
I am now think of the following: Buying a newer (3300 clicks) D7500, a Nikon 200-500 f5.6 and combining it with a 1.4 teleconverter. I would only add the TC after some testing to see if the lens gives me what I want without it.
I have read about the pros and cons of the D7500 and I feel it will do what I want. I’m getting a good deal
(I think) ...about $500 US. From there I may rent the lens for a wknd to try it out and add the TC if I need it.
If anyone has info on this combination please share your experiences with me. Thanks.

Make sure you read the manual for the TC to make sure what lenses it will work on. Just saying.

I downloaded a program called "Instant JPEG from Raw". I believe it was a free program. It produces two jpegs from the raw file. I needed it to view all the RAW files in a folder. It can put the jpegs in another folder separate from the RAW or in the same folder beside each Raw file.

A cold, cloudy November day in New England prompted a few reviews of old photos that seemed a bit weak.

This May 2010 jpg of a fisherman on Lago Maggiore perked up somewhat just by using the Set Blackpoint dropper in PSE Levels. (Reprocessed in Raw.)

Nik D60, ISO 110, f/10, 1/250, 32mm, handheld. Cropped to 14 x 8 for near full HDTV ratio.

Critiques welcome and read.

You did good. Looks to be just about what I would see if I were there. I would give you an A+ on this one.

Thanks in advance for your advice, Gary

As a Advanced Beginner, and still learning, I want to learn and Understand how I may create a totally Black background in my Photo, and make my subject, a person or object, really "stand-out", with no distraction in the background.

The easiest way is with high-speed sync. Of course you have to use a flash and camera that supports HSS.
You can get a totally black background even in daylight.

I have mobility issues although, I push myself daily and am up to most of a mile a day. I do have to use a cane. Due to health issues, I can't drive right now and, I don't have a vehicle.
We do have a municipal park, but it is more of a picnic spot and really isn't scenic.

My Dr. Has told me that most likely I'll be able to drive by Summer of 2020. While I'm happy about that, I hate car shopping. I'm not complaining, mind you, I just miss using my camera. I do thank God for the blessings I do have. Now, I just need to find a local Church that is like the one that I went to as a youngster. I think it's gonna be hard to find.

Anyway, I apologize for rambling on.

Bob, sometimes the most bland of subjects can turn out very interesting. I once saw a photo of a bucket of nails done in black and white that was an amazing shot. Now if I had seen that bucket of nails I would have passed it up. Making something out of nothing takes a very good eye. Good luck in your quest.
