Lightroom CC would give you updates and upgrades as long as you maintain your subscription, as well as Photoshop CC of course.... With Lightroom 6 things started changing between the CC version and the standalone, for example, Lightroom CC has a haze filter, the stand alone does not. As time goes on I suspect that more features will probably be added to the CC version and not to the stand alone.

Thanks Donald.

Can't imagine why you would want to do that. You would be best advised to learn the catalog from someone who has been there and done that. You will be better off in the long run. Otherwise don't bother with LR and just use Photoshop/Bridge/ACR - the raw converter has exactly the same functionality and you can use Bridge as a browser instead of the LR catalog. This is less efficient if all you do is photography, more efficient if you also use the rest of Adobe's software as a graphic artist.

Thanks Gene51, your input is always welcome and to the point.

I've did a search and was overwhelmed with the number of posts on Lightroom. None that I looked at provided the info I was interested in. So here is the question to Lightroom users.

Can the catalog feature be turned off or worked around?

I think I could live with Frapha's method of handling files.

I hope I'm not boring some of you with simple questions but I try to do research before I buy into something.

I use CS6 with several plug-ins and all of Nikons programs as well as the editors that come with windows.

Is there anything LR CC would give me that I couldn't do with the existing programs.

Clearly, you don't understand the catalog portion of Lightroom. Lightroom does NOT move, or reorganize your photos. It does NOT prevent you from using whatever organizing method you prefer.

While my workflow may not be what everyone would select, it works well for me. I transfer all my photos from memory card to the desired folder on my computer, then import into Lightroom. If I decide I want to move any images to another folder, I use Lightroom to make that move. Have never had a problem.

If you haven't already, I'd really suggest you purchase Scott Kelby's book on Lightroom -- very well written, concise, easy to follow and thorough.
Clearly, you don't understand the catalog portion ... (show quote)

Of course I don't understand the catalog that's why I asked the question. Thanks for the input. I may try it but I'm not keen on reading how to books.

Are any of you using a external HD for your photos? If so which one and how many TBs?

I currently use a Passport 2TB external drive for back up. It was cheap and so far no issues.

You may want to go larger depending on the number and size of the images.

My regular internal drives are (2) SSDs.

I prefer to use my own method of storing images. By doing it myself I know where everything is.

I like the KIS method and don't want clutter on my drives or in the registry.

I'm sure CS6 will work on Windows 10, as I've been able to get the first CS to work under the W10 Tech Preview, but why the rush to W10? The privacy concerns on 10 are, to me, forbidding, and I've been working on computers since the 1960s. W10 is quite intrusive. If you don't NEED it, I humbly suggest that you not do it.

There are switches in Win 10 that can be turned off if privacy is a concern.

I have most things turned of and feel comfortable using it.

I have many pictures taken in streets of various countries and festivals, etc. like Brazil, Ecuador with recognizable people, can I enter these in contests where they ask for model releases, also if doing street photography do you need releases to publish these?

Why not pose the question to the officials of the contests before you submit and then proceed accordingly.

I read a lot here about fearing to change lenses in the field. fear of dust. I just received a piece of equipment that came in a 2x4 ft. clear plastic bag. it is now in my bag for needed times.

Regardless of what is used or how careful one might be sensor dust is inevitable.

I think the best solution is to learn to clean the sensor and use common sense.

And don't obsess over it. If the dust only shows up at f22 or beyond and you never shoot in that range why worry about.

In my film days, I always used fixed focal length lenses to create my images. Zoom lenses are a trade off in my mind of convenience versus image quality. So for my digital I bought the best zooms Nikon made.
I recently purchased two fixed focal length lenses and can see an amazing difference in image quality.(sharpness).

Do any of you UHH's feel the same way?

The best zooms will not measure up to the best primes. Like you said its a trade off, but some are so good it hardly matters.

As most of you know, last month Nikon announced "Development of the D5." I wonder why Nikon announces the release of a new camera, especially its "flagship," months before the release, and (also) especially before the gift-giving holidays. The price of the D4s won't drop until the D5 is released. So who would buy the D4s (or earlier flagship model) now. Won't sales come to a screeching halt?

They do it to promote interest and future demand.

Anyone that needs the D4s or wants it now will likely buy it still. No doubt production and inventory will be adjusted as the release time approaches.

I reposted this link because the images are so impressive and worth viewing a second time.

Unless someone told you it was from a cell phone hardly anyone would ever guess that they came from anything but a "Real" camera.

I wonder how many serious photographers scoffed at in camera light meters, auto focus, image stabilization, or even digital....some do still.

Things change...who could have guessed.
