Nikon D5

As most of you know, last month Nikon announced "Development of the D5." I wonder why Nikon announces the release of a new camera, especially its "flagship," months before the release, and (also) especially before the gift-giving holidays. The price of the D4s won't drop until the D5 is released. So who would buy the D4s (or earlier flagship model) now. Won't sales come to a screeching halt?

The operative word here is "develop" That word just means they are researching & developing; not manufacturing.

The point is made. If I was ready to pull the trigger on a D4, I might hesitate.

I bought a D4s a couple of months ago. I figured something new was around the corner as they had dropped the price $500. I don't know exactly when the price drop occurred.

I know that a lot of people will wait for the new release. I used to do that with computers. As I got older I realized that I want, what I want, when I want it. Unless the D5 has some earth shattering innovation, I will have no regrets.

This announcement was absolutely featureless and says nothing.
Of course they are developing new cameras. It's needles to
emphasis this, every body expects this :)

I think, this was a message to people who were thinking to
switch to Canons flagship..
"Hey, wait and watch, Nikons new flagship is in the starting blocks"

But I think also, that the selling of the D4 will decrease with such
a statement :?:

It takes that long for people to acquire the money to buy one. Also, people put their orders in to the big warehouses so they can have them when they come off the assembly line.

Exactly! Not a very good marketing tactic. The guys in sales must hate the guys in advertising.

No announcement was really needed. Nikon has introduced a new flagship ever so many years. It might be on a four year rotation. And then, about 18 to 24 months following that introduction, they will announce the D5s version. Nikon folks can set our calendars by it, no surprises here.

I think it is called marketing. Getting people excited and talking. I was considering a D4S but decided to wait for the D5. My D800 will get some more shutter count until.th D5 arrives. I am very curious if the D5 will require a special Sony XQD card?

Good point on the potential switchers to canon.

It will probably use the XQD, as the D4s uses 1 XQD and 1 CF. Lexar also makes the cards now. I have been using the Lexar, and although the Sony cards might be faster, using the Lexar the D4s is still faster than anything I need. I haven't gotten used to 11 FPS.

Good points. In my mind, my D800 has better resolution than a D4S. The tradeoff is image capture speed (FPS) with the D4S

They do it to promote interest and future demand.

Anyone that needs the D4s or wants it now will likely buy it still. No doubt production and inventory will be adjusted as the release time approaches.
