I bought a Nikon d3200 with 2 kit lenses. What would be a good, not super expensive, basic lens to get which would be better than the 18-55mm kit lens?
Thanks!

Tough question, as you apparently realize. Decide on a zoom range and then read reviews.

Ol' Frank Loc: Orlando,

I use a Sigma 18-250 lens on my Nikon D7000 about 98% of the time. It does everything I want and it was not priced out of this world like so many other lens. The really good lens are out of my fiscal market and I love this one. Also, my wife uses a Tamron 18-270 on her D90 for the same reason... Both lens were under $300 and worth every cent. I also have the 18-55 kit lens you wrote about but it stays in the bag because the 18-250 covers both usual kit lens focal length.

If you're not satisfied with the photos your getting with the 18-55. then you have a defective lens OR you may need guidance on how to use your new D3200 with the 18-55.

I agree with Ol'frank. I bought it for my wife's d5100, but I steal it from her for my d7100 when she isn't looking. Well made, sharp and decent macro, great price at Adorama and B+H.

The basic 18-55 lens could render beautiful images and the 55-200 is very capable too.
Lenses with a large maximum aperture (like f2.8), are expensive and it seems as if you are not interested in them.
I use an old 18-70 f3.5-4.5 lens often with my D7000 and the little lens is very capable when I do my part. In the second hand market the prices are low.
There are many lenses in the second hand market that are sold at bargain prices or refurb ones at places like Cameta that will cost a little more.
Look at the focal lengths you use more often and look at your usual subjects and then you will be in a better position to select your lens.

I place another vote for the Sigma 18-250.

As has been mentioned, it is possible to get good (not great, but good) shots out of the kit lenses, especially if you give them lots of light. I too have the 18-55 and a 55-300 and I will worry about changing those out when I win the lottery or my skill set improves. Until then, it the Sigma and a 35mm Nikkor for me.

What was not mentioned before is that the high dollar lenses don't simply provide a larger aperture, you are buying better glass. It just depends on your budget. Good luck and do your homework. :)

What is it that needs to be better? Are you looking for a larger aperture to give a shallower depth of field, or allow for a faster shutter speed?

Is the 'kit lens' not sharp, to the point that post processing doesn't take care of it to your satisfaction?

Are you looking for a wider angle or longer telephoto?

My point is that unless you know what needs to be 'better', you might be letting yourself be influenced by all the internet chatter condemning kit lenses. I have long lenses that cost plenty of $$$. I still shoot with an 18-70 that came as a kit lens, and the results are just fine.

If you don't need a new lens, save the money until the day that buying one will make a difference.

Keep shooting! :)

What are your intended subjects ?.... Any fast, fixed aperture lens will be better than the variable aperture ones, but will cost more. Plus what is your budget ? Bear in mind that any lens you will look at needs to have a motor in it in order to have auto focus with that body... If you are only going to display your shots online, those "kit" lenses should suffice

A 50MM 1.4. Depends upon what you mean as super expensive. What is your budget?

When I had a D5200, my second lens (after the 18-55mm) was a 35mm f/1.8. It's a beautiful lens, much faster than a zoom, and not at all expensive.

The question, as always, is 'what do you need?' Range (and which FOVs) or speed?

whatever you buy, make sure it is what you want, if you need to save a little longer to get what fits your needs, it is worth the wait. you will invest more in lenses than you will in cameras and the lenses may move on to your next camera if you decide to upgrade. there are many avenues to rent a lens and try it out before you buy one. i would recommend buying only fx (full frame) lenses. they are of better quality usually and if you ever decide to upgrade to a full frame camera, such as a d750 or d810, then you will not need to reinvest in lenses. happy shooting.

Any Nikon DX lens will work on an FX Nikon DSLR, it's just that the resulting image will be less resolution & a have a narrower FOV. Canon DX lenses, however, will not work on their FF bodies... That said, it is preferable to use FX format lenses on either DX or FX Nikon DSLR's. The exception is that with the crop factor, Wide angle FX lenses will no longer be as wide as if they were used on an FX body. One of the few DX lenses I have is a 10-20mm Sigma so as I have that super wide angle capability again that I had in film days, all of the rest are FX format. Thankfully, I can still use my older AF & MF lenses on the Nikon DSLR's I own & still get metering & AF( where available)
