That is a Common Grackle. In certain light the head will be a teal blue. They even have some violet and some brown further down the body. Foathog was right about them cleaning out your suet. Stock up.

Grackles are not particular when it comes to food. They even eat dry dog food.

So, this happened last week. I've had Red bellied woodpeckers nesting in my backyard for the past couple of years. Last week I heard them making a real ruccous so I went out back with camera to see what was up. I arrived to find this European Starling in the woodpecker's nest and the woodpecker trying his hardest to get him out. The woodpecker did win this battle, but sadly ultimately the starling won out.

Great capture.

The weather was miserable today. It rained nearly all day.

The rain stopped just after the FedEx truck dropped of the lens. I had to try it.

So far it is very satisfying. Here is a sample.

Am I correct when I see that you used a tele converter on the Nikon lens?

Don

Does anyone here use super telephoto lenses if so I would love to see how you get around with them. I am not talking about the smaller lenses but the extreme lenses like the f/4 500mm or 600mm or even the 800mm 5.6.

Thank you
Steve

I use a backpack or a tool bag that came with a reciprocating saw. Carry the monopod or tripod in hand and set up at the shooting site.

Never trusted the pod/lens on the shoulder carry but some do it.

look at the Brocka with the nikon . You will always get a better picture with a prime lens vs a zoom. The Detail is sharper on the Tamaron

Both are prime lenses.

Correction: 500 f4 D AFS II.

I decided on this version because it will be used on a tripod since it is too heavy to hand hold, at least for me.

I have been using a 300 2.8 with and without a TC and almost never use the VR. The VR slows the focus at times and with song birds fast focus is critical.

Considerable savings without the VR.

Its on its way to be delivered today. Can hardly wait.

Thank you - much more colorful than our black & white or green woodpeckers!
