No camera will perform miracles, but with a little work, you can still get some very good quality pictures.

First, make up your mind how big you will be viewing these pictures. If you will be viewing them on a large computer screen, or printing them any bigger than about 3" by 5", then you will be limited to ISO 1600 and below. If you are viewing them over the web or on a smaller screen, then you will be able to go to ISO 3200 with no problems.

Definitely shoot in manual. Cameras get fooled too easily by indoor lights. Adjust your settings ahead of time, (so you don't end up with 100 pictures with 100 different combinations of darkness, blur, and grain.)

You are not likely to be able to shoot at 1/250. At 1/160, you will see motion blur, but if you shoot carefully, you will be able to use the blur to create a sense of movement, rather than just making the picture look sloppy. If you catch someone changing directions, or holding their ground, for example, then the ball will be blurred, but the people will look good.

300 mm will get you pretty close to the action, but you will need a pretty steady hand to prevent image shake. Try sneaking in a mini tripod if you can, and let the person in front of you know what you are doing. If you can bring in a full tripod, then do it.

You don't really need a zoom lens as bad as you need brightness. If you can find a 200mm prime, I think you will find that a 200mm lens at F1.8 will take (way) better pictures than a 300mm lens at F5.6, particularly if you can get it on a tripod.

You can generally get away with a monopod for field sports, but in the gym, I have always had to go hand held.

I also found an old camera in my basement last week. Was surprised that it had a focal plane shutter. Says "Folmer Schwind Graflex, Eastman Kodak" with a very clean 7 1/2 inch f4.5 Kodak lens. Looks to be about 5x7 inch with many film holders. Not sure what to do with it...

Send it to me for proper disposal 🤓. Actually, get some film and give it a go. Might want to open the film holders in a dark bag to see if there is film in them. If there is, you will have no way of knowing for sure if it is exposed or not. I would look at the holders with the black marker out and may develop a few sheets to see what happens.

You're missing the point that stoning someone for adultery was legal but wrong and Jesus said so. (Like slavery was legal, but wrong, and violating the slave laws was illegal but right.) Jesus didn't violate Roman law. That's why Pilate said he was innocent.

But Jesus never paid for anything either. I guess he cheated the people who supplied wine for weddings and loaves and fishes for gatherings too?

Jesus challenged the rule of the Pharises and their self serving laws, enacted to maintain their own power over the people. You don't seem to be able to grasp the concept of someone, even Jesus, answering to their own conscience.

You are missing the point. The Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus. The brought to him a woman who may or may not have been caught in adultery, let’s stipulate that she was. The Mosaic law requires 2 or more witnesses, check, and that the couple be caught in the act, check, and that BOTH parties be tried and stoned. The Pharisee brought only the woman, no man. They were violating the law, and they knew it. That is why they slunk away when Jesus said for the one who was without sin, probably in the then-current event, to cast the first stone. He did not forgive the woman or tell her what she had done was ok. He told her to sin no more, but he acted according to the law as the legal requirements to convict her had not been fulfilled.

As for paying for stuff, the president does not directly pay for stuff either. Both the president and Jesus have/had staff/disciples that handled those things. Judas was in charge of the money box that had the disciples funds. Jesus also had benefactors that had means and they funded much of his ministry. Just because he did not directly pay does not mean that he or his stole stuff.

As you rightly note, the Pharisees abused their positions for personal gains, both monetary and prestige. When Jesus called them out on that, he used scripture to support his position. He was both trying to reform them and help others whom they had misguided.

I do grasp that we are all sinners and you have chosen to go down your own moral road regardless of how it lines up with the law. That’s your choice. Comparing your conscience to that of God, well, good luck.

If you think Jesus followed the secular law without question, then no amount of reading has or will do you any good.

Examples? You were discussing Jewish law instances. Got any examples of Jesus violating Roman law as it applied to the 1st century Jews in Israel?

ETA - Mosaic law required both parties in adultery to be stoned. It was not just women as you stated.

The law under which both instances you are discussing was the Mosaic law. You need a refresher on the purpose of the temple and the legal requirements for finding someone guilty of adultery - hint:

Temple - what was the point of the court of the gentiles?
Adultery - where was the guy?

Time for some reading.

Don't think this is true. Everyone is compromised unless you are the unibomber living in a cabin in the woods. I am against war, but I pay taxes to buy bombs that kill people. I love animals but I eat hamburger. The world is a mixture of good and bad, you have to go along to get along, there's no choice if you want to have a job, raise a family, do the best you can. Harry Truman was never accused of being corrupt or accepting bribes, but his boss and mentor did. Like many of us, Harry kept his mouth shut. Total honesty and purity just doesn't exist unless you are in the wilderness somewhere, totally removed from the world. Ghandi, Mother Theresa, they all had their faults and corruptions. No one can meet the standards you speak of.

If I had the coin, I might have a Leica, but I have what I consider a poor man’s Leica - the Fuji X-T2. Size is similar, if much lighter and high quality lenses. Is it a Leica, nope, it’s a Fuji, but it works for me as a travel/knocking around kit.

My only question is does Leica have a tilt/shift lens?

We live in the era of diminishing expectations.

You know what all the world's best photographers have in common?
They never entered a photo contest (or were contestants on reality TV).

You know what they say: "Mediocrity loves company".

I have done professional photography for over 40 years and only had one roll of film in my camera at a time. With digital I only have used one slot at a time for over 15 years. I have no need for an additional slot.

Until you do.

It all depends on what you shoot. If you can redo it, that’s a pain, may cost you a few $$$, but it’s doable. If you can’t get a redo, 2 slots are cheap insurance against a bad/corrupted card & a potential lawsuit.

More light.

True, but I found it cheaper to upgrade to the D500 than upgrade the lighting at all the local fields/gyms. It sure is nice, given the rare opportunity, to shoot in NCAA Div 1 gyms & fields.

What would be your response if someone stated “I shoot HS sports, you know, poorly lit gyms and fields, with my D200. I have fast pro-level glass, set custom white balance for each venue and generally nail the exposure. I have noticed that my daytime shots rival the best, but my nighttime shots always have too much noise. I freeze the action at f/2.8 or faster, but I am always at ISO 800 or higher, more often than not at 1600. How can I get shots with lower noise?”
