If you were to purchase this editing software what is the first one to get.? There is luminar 2018 and luminar 3 or is there another to start off . What is the cost and do you need both of these or just one

I've been using Luminar on my Macbook Pro for about 3 years starting with whatever was before the 2018 version to the latest Luminar 3 version. I was completely happy with the product until Luminar 3. Luminar 3 has caused me nothing but problems with constant crashes, reinstalls, more crashes, lost edits, etc. In fairness, Skylum support were responsive when I contacted them. Eventually Skylum gave me Luminar Flex to placate me which works fine but has no Data Management.

I can recommend Luminar Flex but avoid Luminar 3.

I assumed this had been covered recently, searched and the discussions found were all old. I have been anticipating having to replace my computer (5 years old, booting slower and slower BIOS issues, etc). After doing some editing yesterday on my iPad I was impressed with the speed and ease of Lightroom editing RAW photos. Given this I began thinking about apple imac.

Looks like the buy in is higher but given the expected life and the speed might be worth it.

Wondering what others members who have done this have experienced and their findings and recommendations. Thanks for your help

I converted to Mac 5 years ago and love it. One thing that will happen if you join the Apple world is all of your photos will be shared across all of your Apple devices automagically (Mac, Ipad, Iphone). Apple is more expensive --- don't know about slower as Gene51 says I haven't experienced that -- but so much better than Windows in my experience. Updating is a breeze and none of the other Windows weirdness that seems to come with every PC (blue screen of death, endless updates, etc.)

I don't experience that with my Macbook. Here is what I do: I take the card out of my Canon and insert in the SD card slot on my Macbook and then use the "Finder" Mac app to select and the copy the CR2 files to directly to the Macbook. Once they are on the Mac I then use Luminar to edit them.

Hey guys,
I shoot nature, wildlife and landscapes and got this lens mainly for low light conditions as I’m in the woods a lot. I use it on a Canon 7D Mark 2 (crop censor) but also can use it on my 5D Mark 3 ff. Some wildlife photographers say you shoot wide open and I can see that in certain situations but I wondered for those of you using a 70-200 2.8 what your thoughts are and how you use it. It has been hard to get used to when mounting it on the ff. Also, I’ve been very pleased to see how well images come out mounting it on a my 1.4 lll tc.

Thanks and hope everyone has a great day!

P. S. Btw, headed to Glacier NP, YS and Grand Tetons second week in September for two weeks. Any suggestions on its use in these parks would be appreciated.

We did this trip last year and spend 5 days at Glacier, 6 at YS, and three at Grand Tetons. For Glacier NP - take the Red Bus tour, hike Hidden Lake, hike the Highline Trail if you can (physically challenging) visit Many Glacier Hotel especially at sunrise or sunset. Glacier is one of my favorite NPs. For YP allow yourself plenty of time to tour the park as it is huge and can take hours to get from one of the park to another. Especially if there is some road construction or some Bison out for a leisurely stroll on the road.

I've been using Luminar since 2018 and have an ongoing issue. Whenever I export an image to a folder or to an email etc. it takes quite a long time; about 2 minutes for an edited raw file and about a minute when I start with a jpeg. Raw files are typically 45 Mb and jpgs are about 25Mb. I doubt this makes a difference because my other camera is a Sony which creates a more compressed raw file at 25Mb. I'm using a MacBook with a 1.1GHz processor and 8Mb of memory.
Has anybody had this problem and what did you do to address it?

I have a MacBook Pro (from 2014) with 2.2 ghz processor and 16GB memory and don't experience what you describe. I think it may be time to update the computer.

Its a great place and you did a nice job with the photos.

Too bad some troll had to inject politics into the discussion where it doesn't belong.

My tired, first generation i7 PC, along with its Windows 7 operating system is no longer cutting it; I am taking the plunge and going with a Mac and its 8th generation, 8-core processor. As far as photo editing, I am very familiar with Capture One and hopefully I will be able to transfer the license; this software is claimed to work its best under the IOS system. As an alternative I am also looking at On1 RAW which I evaluated on the PC but found it to be painfully slow; hopefully it will work better under the Mac platform. Any input and comments from members of this forum will be appreciated.

I switched from PCs after leaving the corporate world of 25 plus years using Windows and moved to Macbook Pro and have never regretted it once. Display is incredible and it works seamlessly with my iPhone and iPad. Yes, they are more expensive but it works so well.

Once you get use to the interface, I think you will be quite happy you switched.

I will be in Arizona in January. I will be in Phoenix, the Grand Canyon and Sedona, but have one time slot left. I am debating between Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly. I've photographed in Monument Valley a number of times and it never gets old. On the other hand, I've never been to Canyon de Chelly. Can't do both on this trip and am interested in your opinions

I've been to both and I think Canyon de Chelly has more to offer. I will ditto what others have said that you should take one of the guided tours from the Navajo's there. The tour I was on lasted all day and takes you to the bottom of the Canyon. You will also need a day to tour the canyon from the top by car. There are two roads -- one for the south rim and one for the north.

Not to say Monument Valley isn't great too.

Headed for these two countries next week. Traveling with a Canon 5D IV along with Tripod and three Canon telephoto lenses covering 16-200 mm. Landing in Reykjavik and moving to the NW corner. Any comments ir recommendation on what to shoot, special techniques to use, etc. would be appreciated. My level is seasoned amateur.

Suggest you check out Youtuber Mads Peter Iverson who has done a ton of videos on photographing Iceland and even sells a location guide.

Hi. New old guy here with spotty and varied experience over the years. Did some black and white from camera to print back in high school. Now retired and in the digital age. Ultimately I would like to be able to take a nice image and be able to edit and print it myself. Have a Nikon D750 and i’m looking to pair it with a computer and printer. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'll second the Mac recommendations. I left corporate America about 5 years ago and went from Windows based PCs to Apple and could not be happier. I have a Macbook Pro and use Luminar for editing. Yes, the Macbook Pro costs more but entirely worth it in my view. Luminar used to be really, really good but I've had some performance issues with the latest release so I cannot give it an unconditional thumbs up. Lots of folks use lightroom and I've heard some good things about ON1.

I'll second all those who are cautioning you on seeing all those parks in one day. Ambitious to say the least. There is so much to see in each park that one day is not going to do any of them any justice. IMHO, much better to scale back and do two or three max in a week.

Does anyone use Lumina 3? I saw a video on it and it looks good for a stand alone program but some of the reviews are not the best. Didn't know if some people are not fully up on using it or is there a problem with it? Thank you.

I've been using Luminar for a number of years. Luminar 2018 was very good but Luminar 3 is a bit buggy. As a photo processor it has just about everything I need except maybe photo stacking. The AI features are very good but it does crash a least once a week on me. I'm using a Macbook Pro with Mojave. I've heard the windows version is even more buggy.

I would also recommend Jim Nix's youtube videos. He is very good.
