I had one pecking on a live walnut tree out my bedroom window this morning. Beautiful birds. I have seen three at the same time on my 37 wooded acres last year. Haven't gotten a good shot of one yet.

The people who use cell phones do that. They don't have tunnel vision that only DSLR pictures matter. They start using cell phones a younger age. All of our grandchildren have cell phones and they use them to send us pictures and stay in touch. How can I complain about that? One did have an older Nikon. Then he got his cell phone for his birthday the Nikon is gathering dust.
As they get older they have no need or desire to gravitate to a DSLR or Mirrorless cameras. The cell phone is very portable compact and it more than adequately fits all their wants and if you have a question you ask, you will get an answer.
I find it hard to believe that some morning they will wake up and have a real interest or desire to buy a DSLR. Why would they?

I agree. The cell phone is with them all the time, they never have to think about a camera, they are always prepared to take a photo anytime, and it is second nature to shoot and post on social media.

Agree. When I read the OPs post ... 50% true ... that’s exactly what I thought of the post. DO NOT insure valuables through home owners insurance they overcharge you then drop you for a claim. When I inquired about a rider for valuables from Traveler’s, they were honest enough to say they will do it, but recommended I look elsewhere. There is almost always a better plan out there offered by industry groups. You mentioned one for photography, buy insurance for your guns through the NRA. You want to have your photography equipment serviced by the original manufacturer. At least for Nikon, they will not service gray market equipment and non-authorized repair shops, which can be iffy, will need to get parts outside of the USA.

Well, you might be looking at the wrong insurance (travelers). I have had three claims in the last 24 months :(smoke damage $9500) lawn mower in pond ($6500) and most recently roof replacement due to hail damage ($32,000 for a 15 year old roof). My insurance company is Auto Owners and I have a replacement cost policy plus a rider for all my camera equipment ($40.00 premium for photo rider). Read your policy, ask questions, and assume nothing! Just my experience.

I'm starting to get a little more serious about photography and decided to treat myself to my 1st decent camera for Christmas. What is your personal preferences? I'm researching nikkon and cannon. Budget is between $500-1000 including a lens, which I know depends on the type of photo I will be shooting. Curious to hear your thoughts and if possible give a low end and a high end suggestion with my budget. Thanks for your input in advance

Well, just like being informed as a investor of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds a person needs to read everything available, go to the camera stores and ask lots of questions, do a hands-on with different makes and models, talk to other camera users, read the camera reviews from several sources, and then pose the question "what should I buy" and look for consensus with the replies.

Mostly what one hears from photographers, i.e., pro, enthusiast and neophytes, is that the equipment doesn't matter; its the photographer.

Then one has to ask, how many cameras, lenses, flashes, accessories, etc., do you have? Or what cameras or equipment do you lust after?

I think the evidence suggests that gear does matter, although it may not be most important. A skilled lumberjack with an axe will not compete with a man/woman who knows how to use a chain saw.

I think there are two variables in photography...the equipment and the talent/abilities of the photographer. So, I bought the very best camera and lens I wanted so I could eliminate one of the variables...the equipment. If a photo I take doesn't turn out too great, I blame by abilities as a photographer, not the equipment. Works for me.

I agree about subjective interpretation (our OP's "reality"), but the photographer is working for the owner or real estate agent. If it's an agent/company, it is their responsibility to ensure the listing information (including visual) is accurate prior to posting on their own website or multiple listing sites such as realtor.com.

Vietnam Vet's topic is lacking in several ways - the property could be for sale by owner and posted online with his/her own photos! Normally, I just roll my eyes and ignore topics like this, but I have close friends and many acquaintances in the industry - all of whom are hardworking and honest - so I felt the need to add some facts (real facts, not the fake ones) to the thread

Linda: Your representation of Realtors is not exactly accurate. I spent 45 years in the profession with the last 35 as a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser working independently for banks, S&L, VA, FHA, attorneys, courts, and everyone in-between. I dealt with Realtors daily, some were good and most were not. I rarely found a property representation that was accurate, complete, and in compliance with reporting requirements. Even though I was an appraiser, I was required to be a Realtor and hold a brokers license in addition to my appraisers license. Misrepresentation is common and blatant with Realtors and I gave a ton of examples that would prove my point. Realtors are interested in one thing and one thing only...the commission check...and they will do whatever it takes to get it. I don't mean to be overbearing on this issue, but I understand the reality of the business.

So I have been house hunting. The first step is looking at photos of houses online. I saw a couple of houses that looked great and I drove an hour to see them. The reality is the houses suck. I know your job is to create interest in the property, but at what point do you call it photographic malpractice?

I would ask the Realtor when they took the photo. They may have sold the property before and just used an old photo when the property was in much better condition. There are many ways to make a property look better than it really is, and it sounds like they used every trick in the book to do just that. Unless there is an obvious misrepresentation or omission, there probably isn't much you can do other than file a complaint with the local Board of Realtors, and/or the brokerage office representing the property for sale. Good luck and be persistent.

Realtors generally do their own video's and still shots of their listings. Realtors don't get paid until the listing is sold, and often the listing expires or is never sold. Reasonably good photo's are used for the brochures and MLS services and are created and provided by the listing agent. The only real market for professional photo's is a Realtor with deep pockets, or more likely a Realtor who markets up scale houses or properties that need the visual punch. If you are located in a larger city with lots of Realtors and high end properties, you can offer your services and perhaps have some clients. The same reason Realtors don't have their listing professionally appraised or professionally inspected; it is an out of pocket expense that they may never be able to recover. I have been a Realtor and Appraiser for 45 years. If you want more advise PM me. I am now retired.

I just sent 7 HP cartridges back to their location in a postage paid envelope they provided with my last order. Perhaps other manufactures do the same but simply don't promote the service. Maybe a quick e-mail to the manufacture would solve the dilemma.

One of the most important things for taking pictures is: How to hold a camera!

It has always been taught that with a camera having an eye-level viewfinder, you brace your hands and camera against your head/face so it is steady and does not jerk when pressing the shutter.

Now there are zillions of point & shoots and bridge cameras that don't have eye-level viewfinders, optical or digital. Only the LCD panel. Which you hold at least several inches away from your face.

Whatever happened to good sense in the first step in taking a picture? As much as even the lowest-priced cameras cost, aren't they bad tools without a viewfinder (or a tripod)?

Take a deep breath, let the air out, bring the camera to your eye, and take the shot.
