While watching a news clip of the televised impeachment hearings yesterday, I took a screen shot of my TV because the gentleman in the brown coat was using what looked like a very old school camera, possibly a Hasselblad? Anyway, thought compared and contrasted to the hoard of photographers in the room, all with major GAS, this old school guy certainly stood out. I would like to see the photos he took. Anyone know the type of camera he is using? He did insert/extract large film strips after each shot (assume they were after each shot).
I also noticed this right off and wondered the same thing. Will be watching for replies.
Waist level viewing would seem to work good here for him.
It’s funny I do the same thing when I see a bunch of professional photographers.. what camera, how do they carry (neck strap, black rapid etc).
Sorry I don’t have an answer for the OP just stating I do they same. But it looks like a medium format type Hasselblad
Looks like sheet film holder by his right hand, over all looks too big for a Hasselblad, at least to me.
That looks like some kind of waist level view finder camera. You're just not going to find a chunk of glass that big on a dslr or most likely a medium format camera.

Bob, I did see the photographer insert and take out sheet like negatives. He even put one in his mouth to hold as he was inserting another sheet in the camera. Thanks for viewing and commenting.

Many thanks for sharing this interesting article. Nice to learn about the camera and the man using it.

The photographer's name is David Burnett, and the camera is a 4x5 Aero Liberator custom made by John Minnicks. It's similar in concept to the vintage 4x5 Graflex Series B.

Viewfinder on top and film at back-- it is an SLR!
I wonder what film he was using. Without flash I can’t imagine there was enough light to hand hold and get reasonable sharpness. Hope the images get posted someday. Very cool camera though.

Great thread! Thanks, all.
Yep. David Burnett. He is an amazing photojournalist who has photographed many major events throughout history. He also has photographed the Olympics using a Speed Graphic and covered the 2004 elections with a Holga.
Here is his website:

A big THANKS! to cigar dude, Gene51 and Darkroom317 for enlightening the unenlightened (like me) about David Burnett and John Minnicks and his Aero Liberators.
