Love my XT2 either Camera will be Great but the XT2 as Fuji's Flagship Camera will probably get more firmware updates,,,,already two firmware updates since I bought mine,,,,also I love having the ISO dial on top and the ability to control it with the front control dial on the right side of the Camera,,,,I like the ability to attach the battery grip and shoot all day long and balance out the 100-400 and 50-140 lenses or switch to just the Camera for a small light profile with the 10-24 lens,,,,tough choice either Camera will serve You well...

I went with the Fuji XT2 with the 10-24 F4 wide angle zoom, the 50-140 F2.8 mid range zoom and the 100-400 long telephoto zoom with both the 1.4 and 2x teleconverters if I carry it all in a Newswear WaterRepellent Chest Vest the whole outfit weighs 13 pounds,,,I love the controls of the Fuji XT2 with the Aperture on the lens controlled by my left hand and the ISO controlled by the front control dial under my index finger and the shutter speed on the rear control dial under my thumb,,,,the whole exposure triangle easy to control while I watch in the EVF viewfinder until I get the exposure I want for the shot,,,,however all that being said the Olympus EM1 Mark II with the lenses is even smaller and lighter with the Micro Four Thirds sensor and had excellent reviews from a number of Professionals on the Internet and You Tube,,,,My Advice to You,,,,Buy Both !!!

I have the Nikon 1 V2 with the 10-100mm lens or 27-270mm lens bought it after viewing the pictures and articles by Tom Stirr who does beautiful work with the Nikon 1 System,,,,needless to say I have never been able to match his quality but for a small light interchangeable lens camera with a one inch sensor it is great,,,,took it on a 40 mile bicycle ride the other day mounted on a Cotton Carrier chest harness,,,,not good in low light or high ISO however,,,,have shot Canon and Nikon and Love them,,,,own also the Fuji XT2 with 10-24mm or 15-36 mm lens and 50-140mm or 75-210mm lens and 100-400 or 150-600mm lens and it is a great system,,,I carry it all in a Newswear Chest Vest and even though it is smaller and lighter than a full frame DSLR and lenses it is still a lot of weight,,,,my next purchase will be either the Panasonic GH5 with the 100-400 or 200-800mm lens or the Olympus OMD 1 Mark II with the 300mm lens and teleconverter....if You really want smaller and lighter Micro Four Thirds from what I have read is probably the best compromise....

Birding is fun but Birds in Flight,,,BIF,,,is probably the most difficult photography to do as opposed to stationary birds and other animals,,,,I have a Nikon 1 V2 with the one inch sensor and 27-270 lens and have rented the 100-300 lens which goes out to 810mm,,,great lightweight combo,,,but terrible in low light with a lot of noise and color banding,,,,still one of my favorite cameras for hiking,,,,have rented from Borrow Lenses and Lens Rentals the Canon 5d Mark III and IV with the Canon 100-400 lens and teleconverter and Nikon D810 and D500 with Sigma 150-600 with teleconverter and Fuji XT2 with 100-400 lens with teleconverter but all these combinations were too heavy for your needs and too expensive,,,,I was never happy with the results until I talked to a Professional Photographer shooting birds who said his keeper rate was less than 5%,,,for your needs a good Sony or Nikon or Canon Bridge Camera like the one you sent back but with longer reach might be ideal or maybe the Panasonic Micro four Thirds Cameras with the 100-400 lens which is 200-800mm or perhaps from the reviews I have read the Olympus OMD 1 Mark II with the 100-400 or 200-800mm lens,,,both will be small and light but both will blow your budget,,,,Good Luck and have Fun !!!

The back screen on a DSLR is the same as Mirrorless and I have used it to set exposure and then recompose with the optical viewfinder on Canon 5DIII and IV and Nikon D810 and 500,,,my Fuji XT2 however with the EVF lets me set exposure in the viewfinder,,,,all Nikon and Canon need to do is come out with a 5DIV and D810/500 with the best EVF on the market....
