I agree 100%. I'm still using a Nikon D70s and get pin sharp 16x20's what more is needed?
Bells and whistles don't make better images.

I regularly still use my D50 along with my D80 and D90. Amazing images even today. And they are lots of fun to use. Great tools and great toys.

I've looked at several posts and it looks to me as though I am no where near as good at photgraphy as the rest of you are.

I'll post a few of my photos to see what the rest of you think, do I belong here or not?

Yes you belong here and welcome!!

One swollen case and yes it was a Wasabi, but, that one got dropped onto concrete from several feet up then before I could recover it someone stepped on it.
A few scuffs but looked OK, so since it was the only spare I had that day, in the camera it went and worked fine. A couple of days later, when the camera would not power up, I found the battery had swollen. After I got it out, I found it was also cracked. I am assuming that it was a micro crack I didn't see under the scuffing and label that let air and moisture in to cause the swelling, which in turn opened and enlarged the crack in the case.
I also lucked out in that I caught it before the gunk in the battery compartment of the camera dried. Between a tooth brush, electronic contact cleaner and blowing out with compressed air you couldn't tell it had ever happened, and the camera is still working with no glitches or problems when I use it - not often, since I have a body two generations newer of the same type of camera.

Glad that everything worked out. I was barely able to get my swollen battery out of the battery compartment.

Only eighteen years? Try thirty four years with all types of batteries I never had a catastrophic failure. Wasabi, Canon, Watson and a few others thrown in. No swollen cases, no catching on fire nothing, well except more money in my wallet

That’s great. I only had one swollen case and that was with a non oem battery. OEM Nikons never.

Hi all, I just bought a Canon R6 Mk ii and was just wondering if anyone has had any problem using generic batteries if indeed you did use them at all on the R5 or R6.

I know, I spent $2500.00 on a camera, why skimp on buying the original battery for the camera. Well if the 40 dollar battery works as well as the 90 dollar one why not save 50 bucks.

Anyway I am just throwing this out there and hope it not only would help me, but others as well.

Thanks for reading this and may you all have a Very Merry Christmas a Happy and Safe New Years.

Joe my Nikon cameras are not generic and I prefer to use non generic OEM batteries. Eighteen years with not a failure.

When I had my 12MP Nikon d2 I felt safer knowing that it would survive the collision with some muggers jaw when swung from the end of the neck strap. the lens might not survive but the body sure would. It was also nice knowing that I was carrying a camera that cost over $5K new and I only paid $200 for it. My oldest daughter uses it now to make beautiful images.
With 12MP you can make beautiful 8x10 prints and acceptable 11x14 prints. with AI even larger.

I agree. I regularly use my 12mp D90 and 10mp D80. Excellent results at very little cost nowadays.

Big reasons to buy Macs are the free software applications:

Photos (stills catalogue/editor)
GarageBand (music production/audio mixing)
iMovie (video editing)
Pages (word processing/page layout)
Numbers (spreadsheets)
Keynote (presentations)
Preview (image viewer-editor/PDF tool)
Mail (email)
Safari (web browser)

…and many others. They’re all good — no crapware in MacOS.

Didn’t even know about all those.

Simple = Apple Photos — free with Macs. It has bare bones elements of Lightroom and works on iPads and iPhones. Its file sequestration is weird, but livable.

Powerful and reasonably priced = Serif Affinity Photo — Mac, or iPad, or Windows.

I agree. Apple Photos serves all I need as a simple editor. And it’s free.

I didn't purchase my iPhone for the camera feature but I do use it on occasion when I don't have access to my DSLR. Improvements to cell phone cameras are what every smart phone manufacturer promotes in their advertising and what every manufacturer considers the most important upgrade for their next new phone release. They also add in and upgrade software to improve post processing. They are trying create, in that little box, what we have in our DSLR's and mirrorless cameras and the kids today think it's new innovation and that they are experiencing something that previous generations have no idea about.

Personally, I think they are missing out on the real experience of photography, never having the fun of developing their own film, printing their photos, learning about lenses, depth of field, etc and, most importantly, having to use their minds to decide what lenses and exposure triangle values are necessary to achieve the "perfect" photo. No, they just stick their arms out, take selfies and call themselves creators.

Sew, you have some good options based on the replies you have received. Me, well I have two lenses from my Nikon N80 film camera days which I now use easily on my D200. D200 I broke last year. I purchased a D300-S from either B@H or Adorama. It is a solid baby, lenses work great on it. My story is that I have purchased good used camera bodies at a very affordable rate. If I cannot learn to use these, why spend a lot of money on the new or newer expensive ones ? My opinion is that you can purchase an inexpensive body your lenses will work on. And it will serve you well. Good fortune and let us know how this works out.
Bruce.

I totally agree Bruce. I regularly use my D3400 along with my D90, D80 and D50. Having a lot of fun with all of them. Each one creates a unique shooting experience.

From what I can determine the interest in the Smart Phone as a Camera is affecting the sales of the Point and Shoot style of camera. Perhaps the lower end Bridge Cameras as well. A true dedicated Photo Hobbyist and the Professional, and semi-professional, Photographer will always continue to use the dedicated higher end Digital Cameras, mirrorless or otherwise.

By the way, there is a fine section on this site dedicated to Smart Phone photography.

Smart phones have definitely killed the sales of most types of cameras. For me though I continue to use my Coolpix and usually my D90 with my other DSLRs. No right or wrong for anyone. Call me a dinosaur, my kids do but I am very satisfied with my images and how they are produced.

As I say while camera manufacturers are selling fewer cameras in recent years they are still selling a whole lot more cameras than they did in the 90's. So in my opinion we are still having way more cameras than we need.

I agree. We are comparing camera sales today to the digital camera sales explosion of 15 years ago. A saturated market today combined with mirrorless and dslrs. I doubt that we will ever see that volume of sales again unless the product is totally different and unique from what is marketed today.
