TX. Actually I may have solved my problem since my posting. I put one of the clips through my video program. It was 1.2 GB but after conversion to MPEG, it was reduced to 122MB with no noticeable loss of quality. That should be quite workable. If anyone is doing the same thing, I found the best results using my Canon DSLR set to a frame rate of 24 rather than use my regular camcorder. There still are some bars on the image but far better than when I run the camera at 30fps or use the camcorder.

I am transferring some old 8mm movies to DVD using the movie mode on my Canon DSLR. But the files are huge, A 4 minute roll of movies takes up over 1 GB in the MOV format. Eventually I want to put this stuff on DVD which hold less than 5 GB per disk. How can I reduce the file size so that I can get all this stuff on 1 or 2 DVD's? Quality should not be a problem because 8mm movie images are pretty low quality to start with.

I find I gather favour with the opposite sex by using Photoshop to eliminate or at least soften wrinkles and lines about the eyes. I have even gone so far, while shooting a local opera festival, as to remove 20 pounds from a couple of hefty singers.
Woman, thy name is vanity and Photoshop is a wonderful way of exploiting that failing.

I have been on Flickr for a few years and rather enjoy the fact that anybody in the world can look at my photos. Whether they do so is another issue.
However I dislike the new format they instituted a few months ago. It's too crowded and cluttered. And since Yahoo acquired Flickr, the security and red tape have become absurd. You have to jump through hoops even to contact them. This is a site for amateur photographers to share their work. It is not the US Defence Department! Sadly, like airport security, computer security has become an end in itself and a very profitable sideline business.

A 1981 Cadillac Eldorado. Nothing but a tarted up and problem prone Chevrolet. What bothered me most was that General Motors had a name which had entered the language as a synonym for quality yet produced this piece of crap

My two year old Samsung point and shoot, which I use when I want to travel light, will retain only one image on the memory card. I have reformatted the card, tried two different cards, run the battery flat and used the "reset" on the camera itself, all to no avail.
Any ideas for a possible simple fix? The cost of repair plus shipping make it unworthwhile.

I just angrily quit a local group of opera lovers because although I am 80, I often felt like the youngest guy in the room.

One huge factor in the decline of English was the foolhardy decision to eliminate the teaching of Latin. No, I do not speak Latin. But several years of it have added to my facility in English as well as assisting my limit ed French and Spanish and helping guess meanings of words in other romance languages. In addition to language, the study of Latin helps understanding of law, architecture, logic and even
plumbing! ?

I always remember the comment of one of my high school teachers...IF YOU CAN'T SAY IT, YOU DON'T KNOW IT. Although I have long since abandoned the Catholic church, the good Jesuit fathers and their authoritarian methods of teaching English and Latin nevertheless instilled a lifelong love and respect for the English language which in turn gave me a rewarding career in broadcast journalism. Today's media (PLURAL!!!) and their slovenly use of English are a major contributor to the sad state of the language of Lincoln and Longfellow. Now let's get back to taking pictures...

Travel light, forget the tripod --- you can always find a support --- don't overlook wonderful architecture and great candid shots. And prepare to love the quality of the light in southern France. That's why Van Gogh settled there. Bon voyage!

I wage a relentless yet unwinnable fight against the trendy and pretentious misuse of "venue" and "gender."
"Venue" is a legal term referring both to the site of a crime and to the jurisdiction of the court trying it. It is not a synonym for "location."
"Gender" is a grammatical term and is not a synonym for "sex."

Sorry. I now see that you were talking about VHS home "movies" and not 8mm. Best bet is a VHS-DVD unit and if yours doesn't work, they are not that expensive.
