8mm Movies to DVD

I am transferring some old 8mm movies to DVD using the movie mode on my Canon DSLR. But the files are huge, A 4 minute roll of movies takes up over 1 GB in the MOV format. Eventually I want to put this stuff on DVD which hold less than 5 GB per disk. How can I reduce the file size so that I can get all this stuff on 1 or 2 DVD's? Quality should not be a problem because 8mm movie images are pretty low quality to start with.

This doesn't answer your question, but I recently purchased some 8.5 GB DVD's that would probably hold your entire completed production. I found them at Best Buy. I'm sure they are available everywhere. I just thought I needed more space. Good luck with your project. Flyer

I ran into the same problem recently and could not find a way to make the file smaller so I transferred it all to a flash drive with a 32 GB capacity and solved that problem the non technological way. I also used 4.75 GB discs for smaller files.

TX. Actually I may have solved my problem since my posting. I put one of the clips through my video program. It was 1.2 GB but after conversion to MPEG, it was reduced to 122MB with no noticeable loss of quality. That should be quite workable. If anyone is doing the same thing, I found the best results using my Canon DSLR set to a frame rate of 24 rather than use my regular camcorder. There still are some bars on the image but far better than when I run the camera at 30fps or use the camcorder.

You found it? MPEG files are smaller. I highly recommend against dual-layer DVDs. I have not had reliable results with long-term data storage with dual-layer, only single-layer (4.7 GB).
