i have had three friends who have had to send their cameras back to Nikon and they have all received their cameras back in 10-14 days. just a heads up, Nikon is automatically resetting the camera to factory settings so be sure to save all of your settings to a SD or CF card before you send it off.

in the past 6 years, I have been to disney world 5 times and shoot extensively while there (4000 + images). I have my 70-200 for water birds and for the birds and tigers and deer at animal kingdom. I use my 400mm manual focus f5.6 or 70-200 with the TC20EII for the gorillas, the 35-70 for many of the rides, and the 20-35 for the fireworks... all shot with my D800 which is full frame. If you shoot a Dx camera, just go wider. I also shoot a 28mm manual focus lens when I want light weight... just focus it at about 6 feet and everything is in focus should i need simple and light weight! hope that this helps.

I was too Costco yesterday to inquire about refills since in the past they told me that I needed an old cartridge to make the printer recognize which cartridge it was... but yesterday, my local costco told me that about a month ago, they started replacing the chip on the cartridge so that their is no longer any issue with recognition of the cartridge... I am going in this week with my cartridges to have them all refilled.

Very Beautiful Glass Eye! well done. I shot some of a different variety at my butterfly bush yesterday, but I dont have them processed as yet, but I really like your processing of this little critter! I see that someone else posted that they live in Michigan and did not have them in their area, but I live in Southern Michigan and we have them all over the state... I saw them in the north central part of the upper peninsula in late June of this year. these are a great subject to capture! thanks for sharing.

I got my Nikon mount last Friday from Roberts in Indianapolis, they said that they got 1 on the first shipment and 2 two weeks later, then a month later got 4 and then 2 weeks later got 8... and I got mine out of that last shipment. I spoke with the tamron rep about 3 weeks ago and he told me that things would greatly improve very soon!

It seems to me, that the 800e will not hit the streets till most or all of the current 800 stock is completely gone. Otherwise Nikon is just competing with itself, which has got to be marketing failure. It's not like there is any hurry to rush it out. And they probably won't even manufacture in earnest till they have XX amount of pre-orders, to make production worthwhile.
That's just my .02cents!

I just got an email from my dealer that my 810 is ready to ship, all I have to do is give him my CC number. so, it would seem that the 800/800e are dropping in price.

Just wondering if anyone has compared a Tamron@600 on a FF camera like a Canon 6D to the Canon @ 200 with the TC 2Xlll on a Canon 7D. Each will be aprox. 600 with the Canon @ 5.6, but maybe slower AF. Not sure, but I have the 7D and maybe adding the 6D with the Tamron.

If you have the 70-200 or a 200 prime, both with a 2xtc... it will only be 400mm on a Full Frame camera and 600mm so there would be no comparison. To get to the equivalent of the 600mm you would need to put it on a crop sensor camera.

A full frame sensor (DX) is the same size as a traditional 35mm frame, about 1" X 1.5". Cropped sensors (APS-C) vary in size but, are typically about 50% smaller. The result is that the image fills approximately 50% more of the frame. If you measured the image size of a contact print made from each camera, they should be exactly the same.

Hope that explains it.[/quote]

You stated that a full frame sensor is is DX... that is not correct. A crop sensor or APS-C sensor is DX. a full frame sensor is called full frame nearly always but may be referred to as FX on occasion. I believe that it very important when someone is confused to make sure that the facts are laid out and not compound the issue!

here's a few pics, best 14.00 I ever spent. with storage.
Had to dig out my Coolpix to shoot these.

I have used this strap with my D200 and my wifes D80 for about 3 years now and then two years with my D800... yes it is the only strap that does not hurt my back and neck. Arriving today, I have a dual strap made by the same people that is a harness type and am about to give it a try, but it also attaches in the same way... I have had no issues what so ever with the bottom mount in the camera. On another group that I am on, several had recently wondered if it would give way, but no one had had any issues... a very good strap in my opinion.

That lens paired with an 800 is a pretty heavy package. If it is going to be an all day affair, I would opt for something a little lighter-or an assistant!

That combo should yield some fantastic photos if you can get close enough.

At most, but not all festivals, during the day, there is not much going on.... so it makes a great time to get the nap to make up for the sleep that you lost!

Kelly, thanks for the tips, especially about the tripod and longer exposures. Also the tip to underexpose. Most of the time I shoot manual, but thanks for the reminder.

your Very welcome Don! Just be sure to keep your wide angle lenses close at hand... even after the launch, I am usually still using the WA's... they just do it up right!

This Saturday, if the weather holds. I'll be using my D800 and wondering what lens(es) I should take.

My choices. All FX:

16 -35 Nikon f4
24 - 70 Nikon f2.8
70 - 300 Nikon f4.5 - 5.6 (mid quality)
150 - 500 Sigma f5 - 6.3 (Overkill ?)

Never having been to one, I can use all the suggestions I can get.

Thanks,

Don

Don, I have shot balloon fests many times over the past 15 or so years. I find that as long as there is little wind, your f2.8 is just fine... and if you are like me... and we are all different, I find that I use my 20-35 f2.8 and 35-70 f2.8 by far the most. but after reading about 1/3 of the posts here, what I have not seen is that you really want to take your tripod for the After glow... when in the evening they set up the balloons and then make them light up... AKA glow.

Again if the wind is not too strong, you can get some great shots of up to 2 seconds with a f2.8 lens. I really like the D800 because it makes full use of your wide angle lens, and when I am shooting the length of the launch area, sometimes even in a tethered balloon, it will give you a very unique perspective. one other point is do not shoot to the right... underexpose just a bit so that you don't blow everything out... I always shoot in manual mode so that I can be underexposed by about 2/3 of a stop on my nikons... all of them. hope that this helps, if you have any other questions, I will do my best to answer them at least until I leave on Sunday afternoon for my get away. I did hand hold it and was a bit troubleing at 600 mm hard to hand hold

Jack, I suspect that it was very hard to hand hold it short of 1/1000 sec... maybe even up to 1/2000 sec if you were really shaking. hopefully that will go away!

Thanks for the images. As was said, yes they are for the most part a bit soft, but when your not feeling up to par, these things happen. I am assuming that you were also hand holding a fairly heavy lens which can be a trick in and of it self until you get used to it. looking forward more images!
