The TV show "Last Man Standing" had a great episode about just this issue. In his "Outdoor Man" VLOG, lead character Mike Baxter (Tim Allen) noted that American kids have fallen behind just about every modern country in subjects like math, reading and science. "I'll tell ya what American kids are first in..." Mike admonishes, "Self Esteem!" "Yup," he said, "Our kids have the best self esteem in the world because we lower the bar so much that absolutely no one fails at anything!" Of course none of the kids ends up decently educated or with any useful skills because we lower the "standard of success" so much that kids have no incentive to excel. Having interviewed many a "kid" just out of college, I'd say today's college diploma means the student achieved what used to be considered a high school education.

Tim Allen might have gotten a lot of heat for his political views, but this one hits the bullseye.

I just heard that the local elementary school will not be having a formal graduation this year. They decided it would hurt the feelings of the sixth graders who aren't graduating. Instead there will be a ceremony in the playground. Winners of awards will have their names shown in a Powerpoint display, rather than have them announced. Ridiculous? Yeah, just a little.

At least teach them to say "want fries with that " or "welcome to Walmart" because that's where they are heading.

They had a graduation ceremony when my grandaughter finished nursery school. It can't get more inane than that.

A couple of observations:

Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz commented on the "pay to play" scandal on college admissions, when he stated that in the past, these types of students could be weeded out early, because professors would flunk them in a heartbeat. Now, no one fails. They have to keep these cupcakes in class. Says a lot about education, or lack thereof.

I passed the 6th grade in 1959. On the last day of class, parents brought in cookies and cupcakes. Have a happy summer and good luck in the 7th grade (junior high school). PS - We also had some kids who didn't get passed to the 7th grade. They understood why.

In the 9th grade, we had a field trip for the 9th graders a couple of weeks before school was out. On the last day of school, our home room teacher brought in doughnuts for homeroom period. Have a good summer, and good luck in high school. Again, we had a couple of kids who didn't get passed. They understood.

I wonder how much may be attributed to the kid's attitude these days.....

Learning deficiencies aside, the biggest factors affecting success in elementary education are economic and the level of parental involvement.

I used to believe that, too until one of the teachers at the elementary school said, "For some of these kids, it's the only graduation they will ever have."

A former instructor at the local community college told us that he no longer asks students to stand up and read from the text since so many of them would break down in tears because they could barely read. This is what the government schools are producing, generations of a semi-literate proletariat which will mindlessly obey what they are programmed to believe.

Exactly. The only graduation we ever had was at the end of our senior year and is as it should be. All the rest is just ludicrous.

Curious, Jerry. Whom do you feel made the decision? (teaching staff, BOE, Administration or parents)

What's even more ridiculous is those who will get killed before High School Graduation and, therefore. experience no graduation. Ever.

Another case of the Liberal tail wagging the dog again. Maybe the kids who are not graduating should be told that had they done better, they would be graduating too. Whether you like elementary kids graduating or not isn't the point. Apparently in that school and others, they do/did hold graduation ceremonies to make the kids who are graduating feel great about themselves and about excelling in schoolwork.

Just another example of how things are going in the US today, equal rewards for those who choose not to work hard to get ahead and for those with the gumption to work hard and better themselves. Seemslike a political party is out to give things away and promote not working just for votes. Many people are just happy to get what they can get and live off the government than go to work and better themselves and support themselves and their families. We could talk all day about these things but our time would be better spent promoting those who work hard to get ahead and are successful!!

I think A's and B's on a report card would have made the 'excellers' feel good without pomp and circumstance. Kids who are being kept back shouldn't have it rubbed in their faces by a graduation exercise that they will not be a participant.

It is not rubbing it in their faces at all. It is celebrating the fact that these kids did the work and are being rewarded for it. If we all went with your opinion there would never be any awards given for anything, no ceremonies to celebrate someone or some people who did better than the rest. You are taking the Socialist view that we all work for the common good and nobody should be celebrated for what they contribute or accomplish. When the world gets the word that in Socialism, as you seem to subscribe to, gets around, nobody will be willing to go the extra mile, nobody will volunteer to do something that might be dangerous or will take more time. Why should they. There will be no more money for the extra effort, no recognition even for a job well done. Everyone will be recognized for what you alone accomplished. Pretty F'ed up situation, huh?

Maybe the kids who feel bad would feel better had they worked as everyone else did. I am 73. I look back at others I went to school with, worked with, served with in the military etc. and have never once begrudged any one of those people for receiving awards that I did not receive. I knew that had I worked harder, longer, faster I could have achieved A's or a raise or maybe the recognition that those people received.

All the rage now is to wag the tail of the dog. People aren't supposed to give their kids good or expensive Christmas presents because other kids may not have those same presents. Sorry but that is tough. I have had other kids parents/grandparents buy them a new car for high school graduation while my brother and I had to share a used vehicle we paid for ourselves with my mom co-signing. We never felt bad for our friend who had the new vehicle. We were happy for him. Why shouldn't we be.

Stop with the Socialist horse shit. Kids feel bad only because they are told by you SJW that they are supposed to feel bad. Better to tell them that if they work hard they can have the very same things that others have.
