OK - showing my ignorance here:-) What is a PP program? I have tried to locate it on my files program and it isn't showing up there - and it did previously.

I appreciate all of the suggestions and help!!!

PP means post process to me. It is a program to edit your photos.

Common problem for USB connection in camera to be worn and become loose and hence no connection. Buy and use card reader.

After much help from this site - we've come to the conclusion that it is an issue with Windows 10. We have ordered a SD reader card and will be using that in the future. Until then, we will continue using my laptop to download the photos and then transfer them to the desktop to work with the photography programs that are on the desktop.

Thank you everyone for your input!!!!

I ran into this type of problems with some devices. At certain time when the device is connected and the good driver isn't installed it installed a bad driver. This driver stuck with the computer and can not be get rid of (I don't know how to fix it). My only way to fix it is to format the hard drive and do an fresh install on Windows. I do understand that you wouldn't want to do this.
Now I never use any application to copy files from camera to computer. I would simply use a card reader. If you want I believe after copying the files over with a card reader the software still work for other functions as it doesn't need the driver except for connecting to the camera.

I have a Canon 5D Mark III camera that I have had no problems in the past connecting to my Dell computer and downloading photos. Then all of a sudden a week ago - the computer quit recognizing the camera was attached. My EOS Utility program that downloads my photos from my camera to my computer no longer recognized my camera was connected and in my computer settings my camera was no longer recognized as being connected. I have uninstalled my EOS Utility several times - hoping this was the problem - but to no avail. I even downloaded the program from the Canon website - but it still doesn't work. Thinking it might be a driver, (I checked my shutter count on my camera with a site someone had suggested on this forum - and had to change a driver), I reinstalled a driver for the EOS Utility program from the Canon website - but that didn't work either. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions to try - please help. (And no comments about it being a Dell and not Apple either, please:-) Thank you for any suggestions. Oh yes, my camera is able to download photos using my laptop with the EOS Utility - so I don't think it is my camera??? I have also changed connecting cords and that doesn't help either.

I am not clear on how it attaches to the Dell, but if it is USB, have you tried connecting some other USB device (printer or thumb drive) to that port? If it turns out the port is bad, do you have an alternate port?
Since it works on your laptop, and you have tried other cables, and have tried all the other things suggested (swapping cables for instance), a bad USB port is all I can think is left. Hope there is a work around. If the Dell is configured to allow adding cards you can get one that adds USB ports. It might also be a relatively inexpensive fix at a computer repair store if you are lucky.
Good luck!

I had a similar problem recently, it wasn't a camera, but the same symptoms, a single device that stopped being recognized. The ultimate cure for me was to use the hardware device manager to un-install the USB drivers, all of them, and then tell it to "search for hardware changes". The machine recognized the USB ports with no drivers, and installed the base drivers again. After this, and a restart, all was well again on that machine.

Thank you 😊. It works on different laptop so think we have ruled out connection cords, etc. but we are definitely going with card reader in the future. 😊

Is your camera turned on?

Yes, it must be for transfer.

That sounds like something to try. Thank you for the suggestion. I’m a little leary messing around on the computer when I don’t know what I am doing, but think I might be able to do that without really messing something up. 😊

This is probably not the solution since it appears you've done this many times but your camera needs to be turned off until after you connect the cord, then turned on. If it's already turned on the computer won't see it.

Why not use an SD card reader. I’ve never connected any camera to my computer and never had an issue with my very cheap multi card reader.

Ditto....I’ve used the same card reader for years on multiple laptops, never a problem.
