I appear to have a Google + account but don't know how nor do I use it. However this is the reason why I keep nothing online.

Don't you mean ye another free online service? and if you didn't know you had it or how to use it, what did you actually lose?

Google+ is not the same thing as Google Photos. It was an additional social media platform. If your photos are stored in Google Photos, they will still be there. I pay Google monthly for the space I occupy with my photos. I am quite sure they will treat you the same if the space you occupy is below the limit for which you must pay. All registered users of Google were additionally given a Google+ account. I never used mine and do not care that it is being eliminated.

Simple solution since you don't like that people change free things online. Purchase your own domain and website space. Then develop and post your own website. You can then post and backup whatever files you choose without worry about it.

Why does anyone save online?
It seems quite silly.
This example is not unique.
External drives are relatively cheap.
Have a couple for backups and replace every 5-6 years alternating.
There are more elaborate ways but this is simple, effective and cheap.

Exactly! And I don’t trust any cloud.

As it is with most free sites. It doesn't make them money, so in the end, most of the time they eventually get shut down, if enough people do not move up to paid versions. I never really on the web for a realiable back up, but for sharing, when free.

That's OK, now even things you do pay for are being shared. Just today I'm reading that "Family Tree DNA" is sharing all their files with the FBI. No more a matter of obtaining a warrant. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing. Soon at birth your DNA will be taken and finger prints will too be things of the past. I guess the cloud and many other things are a sign of changing times.

If you research the subject, you’ll only find one small cloud provider that went belly-up, and in that case, there was adequate notice given (months) to move your data, and that was a company that was MUCH smaller than the mJor companies I mentioned above. If Amazon, Google, Microsoft and/or Apple goes belly-up without long notice, it’s likely you’ll have bigger problems to concern you, BUT it shouldn’t matter if they did because you would/should have two other copies - your active storage and your on-site backup. Cloud storage is not designed to replace either of those - it’s a last-resort DR or archive storage.

It's not so much about going belly up, but simply discontinued file hosting services. And this happens a lot. Sometimes the result of a buy out, sometimes not.
The fact is, people are losing their data, including images which are important to them. Yes, perhaps they should have made backups, but that doesn't change reality.

It happens. That’s business and life. You move on to something else like google photos or you could just stop using the web and computers entirely.

I've always told my kids and grandkids, do not put anything on the web you do not want shared...... Once it's there, the whole world can see it and share it..... No privacy on the web.

Google+ was a competitor to Facebook, but never gained traction. Per the email, your Google Drive and other storage features should not be affected.

I'm a bit of a dinosaur... never used the cloud... had no need and never trusted it. HDDs are cheap.

Using binary notation you can count up to 31 using the fingers of one hand (including your thumb). If you use both hands you can count to 1023.
That does take some manual dexterity. If, in addition to that, you can develop pedal dexterity and use your toes also, You can make it up to 1,048,575.

That's a lot of software products.

That would be 32 on one hand and 1024 with two hands. 0 (zero) is data too.

Actually, it might be written as, few(base 2) or few(base10).

Apart from the fact that I only have 7 fingers which would lower your total quite a lot I think most people would assume I was talking about actual individual fingers rather than using binary notation.
And since you are into binary I hope that next time you use the word "few" on here you write it like this "few (binary)" or "few (real numbers)" so that we know what scale you are using !

In case my house burns down (or up, depending on where you're from), lightning strike, the on-line backup is off-site and all automatic.
