If it was me I would certainly be concerned but I would consider it an aberration unless it happens again. The answer to what caused the vertical lines remains unclear based on the responses and your answers? If it becomes a persistent problem then send it in.

I had the same type of problem with one of my cameras a few years ago and also started having the colors distort as well. It turned out to be the sensor going bad. I was lucky since I had bought the extended warranty and was fixed for free (other than shipping). Might be the problem!!

I may do that since I have back up bodies I can use in case it acts up.

By the way, for anyone considering this combo for birds in flight or aircraft, it is awesome! I have been shooting models for about 9 years now and this combo is the sharpest I've used. I don't own any prime lenses, so probably no comparison there. But for a zoom lens, the 200-500mm is very sharp. It's better than the more expensive 80-400mm.

Hardware can always fail, but can you recall anything like a rapid temperature change or something that might have been a stressor? I doubt it given you care for your equipment but I was curious.

It was in a shaded area while having lunch with the temperature in the low 50's. This did start right after going from the shade to sunlight, granted the temps wouldn't have risen that much in the sun. You may be on to something. Just strange that I have never had this issue.

After reading all so far - I am thinking it is R.F.I. (radio frequency interference). This never occurred before.

My question is -
Is this Still happening, and away from the "airfield"?

Perhaps this interference is perhaps caused by a "Sheld Connection" within the camera's circuitry?

I have long thought that when the sensor is "dumping" to the card (via the Buffer) and IF a cell phone sends out a signal to "hand-shake" to a tower - RFI can interfere with the communication of the image data IF there is a break in the "shielding" of the circuitry. ??

When I was in Utah a few years ago, I had the F.M. radio on - However - because of my location the station that it was receiving did not come in any longer. I was shooting from the window of the Jeep and heard a very distinctive -- "Dit-Dit-A Dit" coming for my radio every time I depressed the shutter. To my thinking, the camera was somehow sending out a "harmonic signal" that was being detected by the F.M. receiver that was left on. (If it goes One Way perhaps It Can Go The Other.) I know of no other photographers that this has happened to.

Perhaps it was just a happening in my location at that time? I will give it a try again someday with the F.M. again -- (I currently have changed models of cameras - and I have satellite radio now. rarely listen to the True Radio any longer.

So I am going to chock this up to...

"Strange Occurrence At Procter's Well."

Also looks a lot like the interference that 6 meter (50MHz) ham transmissions used to cause on TV screens. That was the reason for my suggestion.

Anyway...when you get this solved, let us know. My D850 has essentially the same composite body that your D500 does. If Nikon identifies it as from an external source, all of us D500, D750, and D850 owners are likely at least potentially vulnerable to the same issue.

This past weekend I was shooting an event with my Nikon D500 and 200-500mm lens. After a few hours of using it, thin black vertical lines started showing up on the photos. And this was after having lunch. So it wasn't constant use. I tried everything I could think of to narrow down the problem. Both the QXD card and SD card were showing the same results. I tried RAW vs Jpeg. Removed the lens and stuck it back on. Changed from shutter priority to other modes. I stuck in the car and went to my back up body. I went back to the car later and stuck the lens back on the D500 and fired off a few shots to see if the issue had gone away. Sure enough, it was fine. I used this combo the next day with no issues. I've used this combo for almost a year now and have never seen this before. My 4 previous Nikon bodies never had this issue either.

Attached is one of the shots.

Is it just me? If you look at the white Fokker tailplane there are not just vertical lines but horizontal as well forming a grid pattern . Its as if one of the composition grids is overlaid in to the image.
Sensor overheated ?
Hope Nikon sort it for you,

It looks like moire effect, I was a printer for many years and worked in the dark room, you take two negatives, lay one on top of the other, twist the top one a little bit and it gets that effect because the dots dot not line
up properly.
