It’s my understanding that the law recently changed so they are now required to charge shipping for purchases over state lines.
Not shipping but sales tax

Yes I know but I couldn’t afford a new lens & I didn’t think they had used lenses on eBay by Adorama.I was a little afraid to buy a used lens on eBay by a private person because u don’t always know what you are getting. My lens will arrive today from Adorama & I am excited even if I had to pay shipping!

I've bought good and bad off Ebay, most sellers are fairly honest, but not all. If there are "No returns" that is worrisome to a degree (unless "as is" no returns, that admits the item may be less than stellar), but you do have the Ebay warranty to back you up. Individuals can be tricky as some care about their rep, some don't seem to care., most of the "Ebay businesses" are trying to maintain their standing. If a good looking item on the cheap, great, if a lens like you bought, I prefer the big guys with their warranties.

I reckon you've never been to the UPS store and tried to ship something yourself. I think the 11 dollars for shipping was still pretty cheap. You can certainly get stuff shipped for free with Amazon Prime, however you pay for it with your subscription. I ordered some things a few weeks ago from Nikon directly. I got free 2 day UPS air. I got it over a week later. I definitely got what I paid for. The stuff I ordered from Amazon showed up 2 days after I ordered on a Sunday. I have to pay for that service. Amazon probably couldn't stay in business giving free shipping unless somebody was paying in advance.

While I am not trying to say that one should get free shipping (well actuall just the shipping cost baked into the sales price) mail order outfits pay substantially less than a private person for shipping the same item - usually between 20 and 75% of what you pay.

Yes. I realized that after I sent it. Sorry about that.
One can now pay an annual fee to Adorama (VIP360) for $49.99 to get free shipping.

$8,000 for a lens, then no the $11.00 shipping is not a big deal. What would be a big deal is if there's no insurance on the shipment and the lens was not handled correctly during delivery.

So if the list price of the lens itself had been $811 with "free" shipping, would you have purchased? Was the price of the product comparable to other stores? Obviously, nothing is free - these are businesses that need to be profitable in order to stay in business.

On Adorama's site I see, "Shipping charges are not included in our pricing. Please place your order in the Shopping Cart to view shipping charges."

Business is business! Right! We all like to get what we think is the best value for our dollar but we should all remember without profit there be no business. The season is over but the old saw: "there is no Santa Claus" applies.

Shipping is never free. You pay it one way or another.

I have a question about shipping charges on used camera gear.I just purchased a used Nikon lens & was charged $11.25 for shipping from Adorama. I live in Ohio.I don’t remember being charged shipping before. The Nikon lens was over $800.00,I would think that would warrant free shipping,am I wrong? I was told because it was used I would be charged shipping because it wouln’t Be fair to the seller!

Dear Marilyn

per my email to you:

"Upon checking I see that your order number A2018122614291752069 was for a used item. You will see that we do not ever ship used items for free.
We are able to offer 'Free' shipping by making use of manufacturer discounts, which we pass on to our customers.
As we do not have these discounts available for used items, to offer free shipping, we would need to increase the cost of each item.

Basically, we believe that this is a more fair approach for all our customers."

If we increased the cost of used items to enable us to ship them for 'free', then customers in Ohio would be paying more for their gear to also cover the cost of shipping from NJ to the West Coast.

There was nothing on the web page when you made your purchase to suggest that it would ship free, so I'm unclear why you are surprised that there was a charge.

You are, of course, most welcome to return it to us; full return instructions can be found here: https://www.adorama.com/help/returnPolicy

Do all eBay sellers also give you a 6-month warranty (including a 30-day no-questions-asked returns period) as Adorama did with the item you purchased from us?

Mariyng, why not call Adorama and discuss it with them? Perhaps the customer service representative will help you out. A second call can not hurt.

Marilyn posted on our Facebook page and I invited her to contact me. I explained by email why there is a charge (see above)

If a customer has a long and extensive purchasing history with us, or they are purchasing a used item together with new items, or the purchase is for eg a used Canon ME20F-SH, I'd chase up a shipping refund immediately!

UsedPhotoPro (Roberts Camera) sells lots of used equipment with free shipping. But not everything.

And a 6 month warranty? And identical unit pricing?
