I reckon you've never been to the UPS store and tried to ship something yourself. I think the 11 dollars for shipping was still pretty cheap. You can certainly get stuff shipped for free with Amazon Prime, however you pay for it with your subscription. I ordered some things a few weeks ago from Nikon directly. I got free 2 day UPS air. I got it over a week later. I definitely got what I paid for. The stuff I ordered from Amazon showed up 2 days after I ordered on a Sunday. I have to pay for that service. Amazon probably couldn't stay in business giving free shipping unless somebody was paying in advance.

When you go to your local camera store if it still exists, because we all go to the out of state stores that don't charge tax or shipping. They won't charge you shipping if you pick it up. Try buying on line from Hon Kong and they won't charge sipping or tax, good luck

Buying from out of state stores will not get you out of paying sales tax anymore. Most states have now opted for the out of state sales to collect the sales tax. If they do not collect the sales tax, you are responsible for paying it, when you file your state income tax in Illinois anyway.

It’s my understanding that the law recently changed so they are now required to charge shipping for purchases over state lines.

Please cite your sources. This sounds like misinformation. I know sales tax laws have changed. The law your refer to would have to be a federal law. I think you misunderstood something.

Looks like you were informed about the shipping charges before you purchased the item, at that point you had the option of purchasing and paying the shipping charges ($11.00 is more than reasonable) or go somewhere else - your choice. Just wondering why you are asking the UHH folks about this after the fact?

Free shipping is great when you can get it, but if your going to shop on the internet it would be best to realize that someone has to pay the shipping costs. They either hide it in the cost of the product you purchase, or you pay a fee for it. I hardly think $11.25 to ship something you deemed worth the price as out of line. Would the total package have been cheaper elsewhere? Did the $11.25 really screw the whole deal for you?

I use B&H and seem to always get free shipping.

Well I guess I will go back to eBay where they give free shipping.I purchased almost all my gear from Adorama but I think I will go elseware after this!

Free shipping is not universal on ebay.

Instead of thinking being charged for shipping is evil, just look at the TOTAL of price plus shipping and compare that way. If you haven't noticed, that's how ebay list items by price.

Post office charges $13.65 to ship this item from NYC to OH. $11 seems pretty reasonable. Keep in mind that with new items from most OEMs the seller is obligated to honor manufacturers acceptable pricing. If the seller believes there is enough margin to absorb shipping and still make a profit that is their choice. With used items there is no floor to pricing so margins are much tighter unless the item is rare. How did the $800 price compare to what you could find of similar quality on eBay?

One other detail. "Shipping" isn't just the UPS/FEDEX/USPS charge. Boxes, packing, tape, shipping labor, all cost the supplier money. While they certainly buy their supplies in bulk, it's still a cost of doing business for the seller. "Free shipping" is always buried in the "cost of goods sold".

NO FREE LUNCHES

Absolutely correct!

I saw $11.25 in your post and thought you were going to say how reasonable it was. This is nothing. I really don’t see why you are all in a tizzy. There is never free shipping to Alaska, no matter what the item or who ships it. $11 for anything is almost a give away. Buck up and don’t complain.

I have a question about shipping charges on used camera gear.I just purchased a used Nikon lens & was charged $11.25 for shipping from Adorama. I live in Ohio.I don’t remember being charged shipping before. The Nikon lens was over $800.00,I would think that would warrant free shipping,am I wrong? I was told because it was used I would be charged shipping because it wouln’t Be fair to the seller!

If it advertises plus shipping you are going to be charged. They have free next day shipping on some products most likely new stuff. I buy most of my stuff through Amazon prime free 2 day shipping. I bought my Nikon D500 through B&H and got it in less than 24 hours free shipping also.

That’s why I use Amazon Prime for the majority of my purchases. Generally free shipping on most items. I also use an app called Honey that looks for better deals before purchasing.

Just remember that prime items on Amazon does have the shipping baked into the price - but it feels good to get "free" shipping

Not true - BUT - it often comes with some other charge attached
