You should try READING the forum posts once in a while, pal.

Absolutely brilliant and very helpful response to the OP. Maybe the OP has other interests and commitments that don’t allow him to be glued to this forum, as you, apparently seem to be!

Dale40203 About a month or so ago the Supreme Court revisited their previous decision and ruled any state with an in state Sales & Use tax could collect their sales tax on stuff purchased and being shipped to an out of state entity. Most states that have Sales & Use taxes "required" you to send in the Tax Due with your income tax; a MA tax examiner in MA doing an audit of our small company told me that that line was the shortest line in government (:<((. The small retailers have been crying about this out of state purchases for years so a revision was not unexpected. I believe unless you are making a pretty expensive purchase; I don't think it is a killer because you still get the free freight at over $50, and I can always find an ink cartridge to add, but NY's tax @ 8.0% (I think) on a large purchase is enough to make you think about if you are near a no tax state
Personally, I don't think the change will make much difference to the small retailers unless they can meet the prices their larger competitors offer. Except possibly for the expensive items, I suspect most of us will continue to use the sellers we have learned to trust.

FYI- New York City is 8.875% sales tax rate.

I just opened up my B&H shopping cart and saw that Sales Tax had been added. B&H has no physical presence in Kentucky and I have ordered tax free in the past. When did this change take place? Are there any other large online retailers that still don't charge sales tax?

Do you live under a rock?

No business “charges” sales tax - they just collect the tax where required by law to do so. Evidently Kentucky has modified its laws to require out of state vendors to collect tax on items sold to and delivered to persons who reside in Kentucky. More and more states are doing so - and rightfully so. States are losing tax revenue that is needed by the state as well as local governments to carry out services needed in the community- not to mention the damage done to small local businesses (and their employees) as people shop out of area to skip out on taxes which they should be paying.

WOW!!! That was ugly and harsh, to accuse someone of not reading something here on UHH. Do YOU read every single post submitted by every single member, every single day? I don't and doubt you do either. You must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Maybe you need to apologize to the OP.

Maybe your state doesn't yet require out of state merchants to collect it.

It was reported in all the news outlets for years. I guess you are too narrow minded to listen to other's opinions so that you could find out what is fake and not!

This has been coming for years. It has been reported upon accurately many times by the "Fake News" media. While a financial pain in the butt for us, it will give a little bit of last-gasp hope for the few remaining brick-and-mortar camera stores (clothing stores, electronics stores, etc.) that still exist in our hometowns.

In Colorado it was reported in todays paper, there are 340 taxing jurisdictions. Each with own rates. It is a real pain for small retailers, will likely drive a few small mom and pops out of business. They are all searching for ways to comply.
All level of government always want more and more.

Good response. For some this is home. They have no life so they belittle others.

Good in theory, but local stores don't do the volume of B&H, so they have to charge a bit more.

Nothing to theorize about. Local stores have to charge more. If you care about local communities and local people buy local not on E-Bay.

Yes, technically you are correct in that no business, "charges", sales tax. But it is simply a method to explain why, when I, as a consumer, purchase a product from anybody anywhere, online, local business, wherever, a CHARGE is placed upon my bill that I am required to pay. It is a well used expression that we all tend to use since we are paying for something that is a charge to us.

There really isn't any need for smart-ass responses to any questions in this forum. I'd like to think that we're all friends here looking for help from other knowledgable UHHer's. And none of my friends would end a sentence to me ending in "pal". It's responses like that that could keep people from asking questions and remaining in the dark. I believe that's the goal of this column...to answer questions to help us all.
