I’ve seen a thousand images looking straight down the road (#2) for that reason I like #1 Still tells of going on a road trip, but maybe the road isn’t the “main idea” I like both but prefer No1. The mountain is much more Vivid and the white cloudburst is fantastic.

Another vote for #2 - in the first one I'd have to crop closer to the mountains, eliminating the road and the left hill as much as possible. The second one makes me feel the anticipation of getting closer to the mountains, just like seeing the road ahead of me makes me feel on my own trips.

If you want to tell a story, go with # two. Its a long wide open road to whatever the mountains bring. Both photos are really good.

Would appreciate your feedback/opinion on which of these two images you prefer - I plan to submit one for a local review/contest. Of course, if you think "neither", that is good information too.

Taken just north of Santa Clara, Utah near/on (not sure) the Shivwits Paiute Reservation.

Thanks in advance,
Rich

I prefer the first one. The composition emphasizes the actual mountain and what you desired to show in your capture. You indicated that you were trying to emphasize the mountain and the late afternoon sun set. Number two pushes the whole mountain back and makes the road the subject. It's been shot thousands and thousands of times before. It's very centered. Which is fine but doesn't have as much appeal to me than seeing the beautiful mountain with the mountains and the hint of a road extending into it. I also enjoy how you ran the fence line down into the left corner on the first one.

Sorry, my honorable colleagues, but I beg to differ with many of you. The first image, exceptionally beautiful, emphasizes the mountains and surrounding hills which are the story. The road is quite correctly a secondary aspect, but it suggests how you - not being a hawk - are traveling to the mountains. In the second image, the road is dominant, the mountains reduced in size - the emphasis is on the road, but we’ve all seen roads before. Pavement is boring. /Ralph

I prefer the first one. The composition emphasizes... (show quote)

I would love to see just a little more road in #1 where it begins to curve indicating you will enter the valley and head toward the mountain. Still it's much better than #2 (in my opinion.)

Bottom. Classic leading lines.
More interesting.

Both are good photos.
Bottom is of more interest to the viewer.
My opinion.

I think i like the second but first make mountains horizontal; that is, I think the photo needs rotated a few degrees clock wise.

Would you consider flipping the first image? You'd end up with this:

Good idea. I do think it improves the shot. My favorite.

Of the 2, I like the first; however if you could have omitted the road altogether, I would have liked that best.

I like the 2nd one; the first one has its merits if it was composed a bit differently.

I prefer the one showing the road's parallel lines converging in the distance.
