My vote goes to the first one. In that one we can clearly see the rugged mountains and the rest of the landscape. In the second one I think the highway takes up too much of the image and overpowers the beauty of the landscape.

#2 hands down great leading lines.

I like #1. The road is secondary, a it should be. In #2 the horizon is almost in the center, and too much road. IMHO

Would appreciate your feedback/opinion on which of these two images you prefer - I plan to submit one for a local review/contest. Of course, if you think "neither", that is good information too.

Taken just north of Santa Clara, Utah near/on (not sure) the Shivwits Paiute Reservation.

Thanks in advance,
Rich

I like the 2nd shot with the long road. Did you post with a lot of magenta. It looks very blue purple come highlights might lift if a bit. Good shot.

Tough choice but I’d go with the second one. Down load show lead right into mountains. Very nice.

Personally I like the rugged beauty of the mountains in the first photo as opposed to the long ribbon of asphalt.

Hey Rich, after all these answers to your question, and 5 pages later, WHICH one are you going to finally choose to put into the contest?

I love being "on the road," and seeing the entire mountain range as I would through my windshield. So I vote for #2.

Would you consider flipping the first image? You'd end up with this:

Good suggestion - I like this version.

I favor the first image for it's eye catching color even if the offset, curving road is not really adding anything of value. But.....What if you cropped the second (straight road) image so as to have less road and as much of the best color of the mountains as possible?

I did a crop as you suggest - and I agree it does seem to improve the image - less road, more mountain as many have suggested. Thanks!

First, thanks to everyone who responded. I very much appreciate all the feedback and comments. I decided not to submit either image. I do still like both of them, mostly because I feel they capture accurately what the scene 'felt like' to me in terms of color, scale and beauty, however there was enough discussion to convince me that I could have done much better in terms of originality and composition. The suggestions to crop #2 and to 'flip' number 1 were both excellent, but the basic image is still what it is. I plan to take the suggestions etc. provided and try to consider and apply them when shooting going forward.

Again, thanks to everyone for taking time to participate. I am very grateful.

Well, I didn't count the votes for each image, but seems to be pretty close. I think both images are very well done, as each has it's own story. #2 seems to take a bit of flack over the "road to nowhere" aspect. However, anyone having driven Hwy 50 east across Utah will tell you that the beauty of the drive is the long, strait, lonely road and stark beauty of the desert. As to which one you should display? I don't know...

BTW, if you want to thank each replier, please do so.

I like the strong perspective leading to the mystery of the lovely mountains. and Donrent, the OP did not ask the worth of the photo to YOU. The question was simple, neither was not an option.
