Mine works... Shared drive with 2 PCs and two Laptops. Wireless.

I do not share images though, just .ISO files.

Windoze 10 will not uninstall either the WD backup drive helper or WD backup snapshot "apps". Drive is directly connected to my computer and every file has been deleted. I have used WD software in the past, but this is either (2016) so outdated as to be useless or is just a piece of crap. The repeated failure of download attempts it what's ticking me off the most.

Sorry... but the sledge hammer is looking more and more satisfying.

The WD backup and access installations take me to the point where they ask whether I want to access or back up, but then inform me that there is no backup device available. A choice is "rescan", but when I select it, it shows that no backup devices are available. All those who have PM'd me - send me your snail mail addies and I will send the pieces of this hard drive, no postage due. Can't guaranty that they'll be in usable condition.

If anyone wants it, send me a PM and I'll send it free for postage. You may be more tech savvy than I am and can make use of it, but it's a piece of useless crap for me. It's either sent to a UHH member for postage or tossed in the landfill for me.

I'd love to have it. Please PM me. Thank you.

I can understand your anguish-- I have a gadget that used to read my glucose meter and send reports to my doctor. Alas, the PC it worked on died and the new one keeps telling me the file to be downloaded has a virus, so will not download it. I seriously doubt it was this software that killed other PC.

But, I digress. I suspect that if the drive isn't somehow broken, there is some secret hidden command buried within Windows to solve the problem. You did say this was a new PC, right?

This will not make you feel any better, but after the NumLock key stopped working and the number pad did nothing, I was ready to toss the keyboard until one I dug out of an old bin had the same problem. Much digging around through completely unhelpful "advice" and "troubleshooting" sites and boards (there are a LOT of them) pointed me to some oddball command somewhere in Settings and the problem was solved. I'm guessing one of the Win10 upgrades changed that switch, just like another upgrade wiped out my WiFi connection. WiFi was easier to deal with, thank God, or whomever.

Have you tried asking a tech at wherever you bought the drive? That's often a last resort, and impossible if you got it from Amazon or WalMart, but may be worth a try.

I bought one last year too and my opinion is much the same as the original author. It is useless as is in my view.

I would not use a WD Drive ever again they are pron to failure I lost hundreds of pictures and videos from years of work, I’m an international photographer and I travel all over from South Korea to the Philippines and that’s where I am now reading my UHH blog and just had to put in my two cents worth, I now use LaCie Rugged hard drives for four years now and travel with them constantly and has never had a problem, WD is a cheap unreadable drive in my opinion.

I just want to clarify that there is nothing "wrong" with the drive and no fault on the part of the seller. It just will not work with my new laptop and the complete lack of tech support from WD is frustrating. Missing web pages and no response to a support request I submitted two days ago.

I deleted everything from the drive overnight and will try another restore today before I toss it.

Have you called WD support? They may be able to help get it going.

Wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole. They are horrible. Even if you get it working, it will fail sooner than later. Some people have had luck with them for the time being, but they will fail, usually at the worst time. They are fine for temporary storage, like when you are bringing someone a large set of images, and are only copies of existing ones. But not as backup ECCHHH!

Sorry you had to find out the hard way. Can't you return it?

I am slowly switching to SSD's (Solid State Drives). I say "slowly" because of the higher cost. They are considerably faster than hard drives, and have no moving parts. While nothing is "failure proof", I believe the SSD's are far lees prone to failure.

Don't take any chances. Use the 8 lb. sledge.
