I called either B&H or WD when I had similar, but not the same problems with mine. They walked me through it and it works flawlessly. The online instructions and manual didn’t work for me either. I felt they left out key information. Hope this helps! There’s nothing worse than tech that doesn’t meet expectations.

I recently purchased 2 TB Passport by WD. I too had difficulty loadingbit on my new computer. I called WD and got help with install. Then the following day it did not automatically update, so I called again and got the problem solved It has been working fine ever since.

I would not use a WD Drive ever again they are pron to failure I lost hundreds of pictures and videos from years of work, I’m an international photographer and I travel all over from South Korea to the Philippines and that’s where I am now reading my UHH blog and just had to put in my two cents worth, I now use LaCie Rugged hard drives for four years now and travel with them constantly and has never had a problem, WD is a cheap unreadable drive in my opinion.

Just a word of warning. LaCie (now owned by Seagate) doesn’t make the HD, just packages them, and they typically use the cheapest drives available. You may have been lucky up to now, but I’d make sure I had a good backup unless you want a repeat of your past unfortunate loss.

Can't set it up, can't use it for backup, can't use it at all...

If anyone wants it, send me a PM and I'll send it free for postage. You may be more tech savvy than I am and can make use of it, but it's a piece of useless crap for me. It's either sent to a UHH member for postage or tossed in the landfill for me.

Already have one, been using it for years with no problems. Also have a Seagate Backup Plus as well.

I have an older 1tb model that seems to work OK. Good luck with yours. I generally use things that don't work properly, and/or purely frustrate me to no end, for target practice. I enjoy seeing all of the small pieces fly all over the place. :~)

If it's still available I'd love to try to get it to work. Let me know what the shipping cost is and I'll get a check off to you tomorrow.

It's a 2 TB drive. I don't know how old it is, but none of the installation instructions work - they all lead to a dead end. I will post photos of me destroying it with that five pound sledge.

How could you not know how old it is?

sorry to hear that, their instructions are crap and it's all needlessly confusing. I did get mine to work but it's just not a intuitive or seamless unit!

It hasn't failed. It just will not install. The setup PDF is more than useless - following the instructions leads inevitably to "Cannot find webpage" 404 error. Can't connect simultaneously to both Internet and Passport. Software won't update. Installed both Access and Backup software, but neither one will start. Probably just too old for my setup.
Headed for the landfill. After I throw it against a stone wall, just to take out my frustrations.... I also have a good sized sledge.

There is nothing really to "install" with the HD. If you can delete files on it, and write files to it, it is "installed", and is working. In fact, if Windows sees the drive after you plug it in, it is "installed" and working.

If the backup software that came with it doesn't work, or install, or whatever, that is a software issue, and destroying a 2 terabyte HD because you can't get the software working is not smart. Trying to get a wifi backup going on a wifi network can be problematic, if that is your issue. Otherwise, there is a ton of backup software available that will work with any working HD.

SSD drives fail too. I had one at work. It was the boot drive. Failed after a year and took all my work with it.

Sorry for your troubles. As you know, The Passport has several ways of downloading information and both wireless and USB capabilities for interfacing with a computer or tablet. I use mine when traveling longer trips to secure additional photo backups. I have interfaced wireless with my iPad successfully, but directing photos to folders has occasionally been a bust. Downloading SD cards has been effective, but sometimes with my Ipad as the interface directing the download, the folders have been populated unusually. My interface with my MacBook Pro has been similar to any other hard drive and are extremely uneventful.
Every hard drive from every manufacturer reviewed on Amazon has several customers with defective products. I wouldn’t trash or destroy the thing, I’d contact Western customer service and B&H, if they can’t help make it work see if they can’t help exchange it for a new one. Most credit cards have purchase insurance as a last resort. I now have more files downloaded as backup directly from a computer then as a wireless stand alone because The Passport is huge and works flawlessly like that. When solid state comes down a bit, I will likely get a Passport to use in all my travels, not just extended trips. I just don’t trust jostling a traditional hard drive all the time. They break down.

Look up 404 error on internet. Could still be a problem with your computer. Lots of data out there about problems with the WD passport but they offer suggests on fixing. Might try that before the sledge! I have the "My Passport" and it worked OK. Not real happy with the way you have to go and search for files. The simple way to use the drive is just copy the folders you want backed up to the hard drive. That works so much easier than the software. You just have to remember to back up every so often. Another way is simply store all files on OneDrive/DropBox. Backed up automatically,

I’ve got to check the calendar. Today must be April 1st. The op doesn’t know how old the drive is? I sent him a pm offering to fix the thing for him and his cost would have been the return postage only. It seems he is only interested in sledgehammering it? In all my years of building and repairing computers, I can’t remember anyone opting for destruction over repair with virtually no cost.
