It may be the answer for "what camera system should I take on my trip."

I'm thinking that THAT particular question will never go away, Steve.

Nikon Announces Development of Next Generation Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera and NIKKOR Lenses—Featuring a New Mount—That Pursue a New Dimension in Optical Performance
MELVILLE, NY – Nikon Inc. is pleased to announce the development of a next-generation full-frame (Nikon FX-format) mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses featuring a new mount.

The new mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses that are in development will enable a new dimension in optical performance with the adoption of a new mount. The system is the result of Nikon’s unsurpassed optical and manufacturing capabilities gained through more than a century of imaging expertise. Proven reliability and trusted performance are core traits of Nikon Digital-SLRs, and decades of feedback from professional creators around the world has further contributed to the development of this system.

Through the development of this new mirrorless camera, Nikon reaffirms our commitment to providing photographers with the ability to capture images that are richer and more vivid than ever before.

Additionally, an F-Mount adapter is being developed that will enable the use of a wide variety of F-Mount NIKKOR lenses with the new camera.

Nikon will continue to lead imaging innovation with the launch of the new mirrorless camera and the continued development of Nikon Digital-SLR cameras as well as the impressive NIKKOR lens lineup. Soon, Nikon users will have two industry-leading camera systems to choose from, giving consumers the choice to enjoy the unique values that each system offers.

So in other words Bill, Nikon is playing 'Catch Up" to the Mirrorless technology. All other companiies will also be playing catch up and that's a good thing. Competition breeds better technology, better quality and lower prices....'bout time

With the success of mirrorless cameras by Sony, Nikon had no choice but to join the mirrorless Party, as one earlier thread stated. Sony sells both qualify crop sensor and full frame mirrorless cameras. Sales are good. And new Sony E-mount lenses are now being manufactured by Sigma. Fujifilm, Olympus, and Panasonic, are to be recognized too for mirrorless quality cameras. Hats off to Nikon releasing a new mirrorless.

Nikon FF mirrorless is not for me. It will be far too expensive.

Probably slightly less than Nikon's D850, which is selling for $3300. And, on backorder from B&H. That DSLR is still a hot seller today. It will be interesting to see if Nikon's new mirrorless will be a big seller. Sales may be gradual, as skeptics will exist?

I realize that the F-mount is nearly fifty years old, but it is the reason I have stayed with Nikon since I started shooting 35mm. Nikon tried thes BS before with the Nikon One compact, and very few people bought them. I am not interested in this system, and will not be buying one, no matter how good it is!

"Additionally, an F-Mount adapter is being developed that will enable the use of a wide variety of F-Mount NIKKOR lenses with the new camera." If this statement is accurate, when will production start, and how soon will I be able to go online and buy one? "...is being developed" is a bad expression for Nikon to use. This sounds like a long term project.

I don't think that your current DSLR's are dog meat but if it is I would be very happy as I can buy them for cheap.

I've been wondering about the D850 shortages. Why can't Nikon make enough of them? Is the D850 out-selling the D3xxx and D5xxx series? I doubt it. While people wait for the D850 to be manufactured, they see other brands that are worth their consideration.

Yep, I was with Ford for a long time until Toyota blew them out of the water. Nikon sees the future of this technology, can't be left behind or out of the market and it has to compete if it wants to survive.

I definitely agree with you on this. Even Gene51, is impressed with Sony's New line of FF mirrorless cameras on the market today.

Stick to your guns, js. I have been completely satisfied with my various Nikon SLRs since my first camera in 1980. Mirrorless may be the wave of the future, but as long as my DSLRs work as well as they do, I'm cool.

No, the folks who have ORDERED their D850 are not seeing other brands that they considering. Only the folks who have NOT ordered their D850 are considering other brands because they have not decided to DISH out the money for one. IT IS THAT SIMPLE.
