The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local Democrats.

Nixon's team can say and do whatever they want, they can make themselves more important in their own minds than they are in reality, people vote for their own self interests and principles, more often than not for economic reasons.... There was no great exodus from the democrat party based upon Johnson's civil rights act.

So why did the Nixon lose the south?

Why did Carter carry the south?

Why did Klinton carry the south?

Why did only two of the twenty one southern senators flip?

Why did the south not flip until well after Nixon was dead?

The actual strategy was from the D party to hide their racist past and take away the black vote, which had been a reliable R bloc, while blocking real social reform ... and at the same time dividing the country even further through racial politics.

That was the true southern strategy.
