After the Civil Rights Act was passed and signed by LBJ, the old Democrats from the south, also known as the Dixiecrats left en masse and became Republicans.
Besides that, if the last good thing your party did was in 1870, you might be a Republican.

Strom Thurmond, Jessie Helms to name two are why the Republican party exists today in the South. When Johnson signed the bill into law the Dixiecrats left in mass. If we moved the 13th,14th,15th Amendments from the 19th Century in which they were passed. would there be as much support on the right wing today as there was back then. I seriously doubt it in todays political climate of the right wing.
