I see photos on line or on T.V. of pros at events with their Canon cameras and their white long zooms, with only a few other cameras.. Now this is a can of worms, Lee. Both Nikon and Canon make absolutely fantastic photo gear. I can say that at the time I "got into" photography (long time ago) the trade mags were saying that >70% of professional photographers who made a living from 35mm were using Nikon. Canon made a big push to change that and I saw a number of Pro long-time Nikon users switch to canon (Dewitt Jones, George Lepp, etc). Some of my friends did, too. Then, when Canon "switched over to" the EOS system, making their former lenses incompatible with their EOS cameras, I know a few guys who got pissed and dumped Canon for Nikon since Nikon maintained backward compatibility into the AF era and on into Digital. I see a lot of both brands when I am out shooting but I am seeing more and more "low end" Nikons now and I think the gap may be closing, with Canon still the leader in sales.

I have read that the Nikon menu system is less intuitive than Canon, that might be the reason for all the new user inquires. Sort of like the difference between Windows and Apple. I mentored a fellow club member on her Canon and had to make a bit of a leap to get used to the menu options and layout. I'm a Nikon user.

Here's my take on this subject. The average person buying their first DSLR will go Canon because they have name recognition. The average inquisitive person will do some research and find that Nikon has better shadow recover and go that route. I too went with Canon because of the original Digital Rebel and stayed through the T2i. After getting a Sony A57 with EVF I knew that DSLR's were not in my future although I would like to be able to buy a Sony DSLT with Canon EF mount.

Hi I`m new to this forum, and the digital world. I bought a Nikon D5500 1 because a friend of mine had one and his photos allways looked better than mine
At the time i had a cannon QL. So i allways wanted a nikon. Not noing anything about digital cameras i thought all cameras that looked like the old 35mm bodys were 35mm.But i picked the 5500 because of it being 24 mega pixels. I was disapointed when i found out it it had a crop sensor not 35mm sensor. So i sold it and bought a nikon D750. Now i feel better.I don`t take any better photos but i feel better Now.

I was a loyal canon shooter in my 35mm days. When i decided to buy my first good dslr i looked at both canon and nikon. Settled on the nikon as it felt better in my hands.

If I understood Lee correctly he also thought that there are more Canon (at least the pros) users than Nikon user by what he saw. However, he noticed that there are more posts with questions on Nikon than Canon.

YES. That was the question. As I said, I don't think I notice much of a difference among local pros here, but I do see a lot more entry level DSLR Nikons than Canons. I have noticed a preponderance of "white supertelephotos" at sporting events, but as someone pointed out, that's not necessarily a Canon thing exclusively any more.

So more questions on Nikon could be because there are more beginner Nikon users perhaps. Perhaps as I have said earlier the Nikon lens line up is confusing. Or perhaps people who use Nikon aren't as smart as people who use Canon? Don't mean to insult anyone as I am a Nikon user.

I can only share my personal reason of one vs. another which was because my first upscale digital camera was a Nikon D100 which I bought because it looked and felt like what I thought a good camera should at that time. Before that I had a Sony digital camera that used a floppy disk and I had an Olympus that used a strange media card.

Then I started acquiring lens and accessories. One by one until I had two gear bags worth. When time passed and technology soared, I choose to go to a Nikon D3 simply because I was committed to the gear in my bags that I had invested in over time. Finally moved to the D810 about 6-months before the D850 came out.

I have a Fujifilm X-T20 with a 18-55 lens that I carry as a 'walk-around' camera and I carry them both at the same time.

I suspect that Cannon or other brand loyalist are not much different in their reasoning.

Building up legacy gear, in the form of lenses, spare bodies, even batteries, now carries a fair investment pricetag. Although used gear is pretty saleable, it seems to me that there are a lot of people afraid of ebay, Craigslist, etc. The longer you're in a system, the more expensive it can be to switch.

From what I've read, the Big Two have had different periods of dominance in the entry level market, which have shifted over time. That may also play into the relative balance of newbies choosing one system over another. Judging from the questions here, a lot of newbies seem to be buying older or used gear rather than the "Latest and Greatest" entry level models. That's certainly what we did.

In film days, we were a "Mixed Marriage", but my wife converted to Nikonism when we went digital!

Very interesting comment... You are right that it brings out the diehard brand users with a vengeance ... There has to be one that just has a chip on their shoulders and look for an argument... Thanks for your comment..

I agree , and might add that some might ask a friend that has a camera which one to buy...

Probably makes sense that more basic questions come from newbie Nikon users than Canon, based on the fact (I’m surmising) that Nikon has generally higher brand awareness among beginner photographers than Canon when it comes to cameras and lenses. While Canon is also known as a camera and lens manufacturer, they are also known for copying machines, printers, toner cartridges and even inexpensive pocket calculators. Among the general public, Nikon is known as a camera company — and only a camera company, with an excellent assortment of generally top-rated lenses. And who knows? Anyone who was brought up listening to Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome” is familiar with the “I’ve got a Nikon camera” lyrics in the song, which could have a subliminal effect on brand recall and subsequently a newbie’s selection of a camera system... It did for me.
