blaming your equipment, when it is top quality, is a bit silly.

It may be time to take a look at your technique and find ways to improve your photographic skills.

With respect, you tell us that the Canon lenses are better than the Nikon yet the Nikon gives sharper photos. Am I missing something here. How then are the Canon lenses better?

You're confusing lenses with cameras sensors. For lenses it's all about line pair resolving power. With Nikon sensors, which don't have low pass filters, images tend to be a bit sharper than Canon sensors which do. But that is separate from lens resolving power. I haven't looked at resolving power statistics recently so I don't how Nikkor lenses stack up to Canon lenses in that regard.

Jcor,

Since I can get sharp pictures with a 1” sensor camera, I suspect your problem is not your equipment. Want proof? Let your friend shoot with it for a while and compare your pics with his.

Jcor - I have two thoughts, actually three: First, were there such a discernable difference, it would be widely known, discussed, and severely impact Canon sales - thus prompting a mission critical Canon project to improve their product. So, logic should indicate t'aint true McGee. Second, if you're still concerned set up a controlled experiment using both camera systems, using a tripod, same settings, same focal length, etc. If you do see a difference, I'd recommend you next have your lens checked by a good shop. Finally, don't take previous remarks as criticism. I remember an Ansel Adams quote RE we don't take pictures, we make pictures. My best wishes to you on our mutual journey.

Sounds like a problem behind the camera.

Not all Canon cameras have filters but any how ... Resolution and sharpness are separate issues.

The RAW image is raw and you apply the degree of sharpness after the fact to your in focus image... it has no sharpness in the data, only pixel focus. Jpeg contains an in camera sharpness process added...

A good lens has an ability to be in focus at center and to the corners. A poor lens will never get the pixel sharp because of it's lack of focus or poor quality to the corners.

A great lens on an average camera would do a better job than a poor lens on a great camera...

Many over sharpen an already sharp image not recognizing what sharp is or try to sharpen an out of focus image... what would be sharper, a circle written with a ball point pen or one made with a worn crayon.

Did your friend take it to post and sharpen his image before you saw it? Hmmm...I wonder? Did you know you can micro adjust lenses and in fact should do so, if needed. It’s not uncommon because lenses are not matched up to bodies. There are many articles on this subject. I suggest you check them out.

I have L Series lens also. Have you had someone (or you) use a focus board (not sure if that is what it is called) and fine tune the focus for each lens to your camera? Once adjusted and set, the camera will remember that lens. It made a difference in a couple of my lens. The others were already spot on.

The other thing to consider... There are generally 5-6 exposure combinations of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO that will work for any shot. However, the end results can vary in terms of sharpness, depth of field, etc. The best exposure settings to use often depends upon the composition of the picture. Do you want sharp focus through the entire depth of the photo as in a landscape shot or do you want limited focus as possibly in a portrait or other macro shots. Today’s cameras are smart, but they can’t read your mind. It you are not shooting in manual mode, start doing so. I am also a musician and I have discovered that I have to practice with my camera equally to my instruments of choice.

When I see someone who is getting shots like I want to take, I will ask them what they are doing to get those shots. Most people are not just glad to share with you, they are proud to share with you. I often find that I was missing the boat in the first place!

Like others, I seriously doubt it boils down to Canon vs Nikon. They are both outstanding cameras and lens.

Friends, I came in to this great forum with a couple of objectives: sharing few pictures that I think are worth sharing and by listening to the comments and questions by you guys and gals see if I can expand the little photographic knowledge I acquired during last 1/2 century or so photographing people, things, landscapes, etc. I have found however that few times we are knit-picking on few subjects like the Nikon/Canon stuff with a loss of objectivity and in my opinion staying too long with comments with nothing to add.
I don't know about how most of you feel, but I'm "kinda" fed up with this.
Thanks

Maybe it's past time that you did a micro-adjustment for each lens you use. If that doesn't work then maybe you should sell your not so sharp camera and lenses but be sure to let the buyer know they're aren't all that sharp. Then go out and buy the latest and greatest Nikon out fit you can find and if that doesn't fix the problem you just may find out that the diopter adjustment wasn't set right on your Canon camera. Best of luck!

Swap equipment with your friend and see what happens as you compare photos. You will quickly see if it’s you or the equipment.
