Even though the TITLE and in the OP's statement BOTH state that he did NOT want Pshop, I knew someone would attempt to correct the OP and defend it. It's like they own stock in the company.

Similar to the proverbial saying about a mule, it sometimes takes a 2" by 4" hunk of wood to let me know when to comment or not. At least I'm trying. Should anyone have heartburn about that, PM me. Don't take up this post.

As it is, rmalarz comment about the free stuff and Bill_de about Paintshop Pro and On1 are great. BTW, On1 did offer a free version 10 or 10.5???, (they may not anymore??? Contact the company to find out for sure), a free version. You might also consider Capture One Pro, (My favorite)

Besides just looking at photos everything mentioned above have a lot of great features included too.

You might want to clean your glasses and return to the text of the post for another reading. Our OP went on to provide a reason for not wanting the Adobe products. But, their stated reason was factually incorrect which was quickly identified as an error. A better understanding of the facts may impact the OP's decision making when assessing the available software for their stated needs.

I've used ACDSee for many years. It is a close clone to Lightroom, but does not have the same file structure. It seems to do work as well as LR and you can buy it outright. The imaging viewing options is way better which is why I have it in addition to LR. It is less expensive than LR and you can download a 30 day trial. They also offer a lot of price deals.

PCC does not store your images elsewhere besides your hard drive, unless you choose to store them elsewhere.

Photoshop Elements may serve your needs. Last time I looked, you can buy PE as a standalone photo-editing program.

Just an FYI not an argument but the monthly rental fee of $9.95 per month for Photoshop Creative Cloud also includes Lightroom in the package. Adobe regularly updates its software and adds new features and functions at no extra cost. PCC presents the most powerful photo-editing program on the planet.

Note that I am not a shill or a salesman for Adobe, only a satisfied user.

Good luck.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a program to download images from a CF card? I do not want to use Adobe Photoshop CC, so I need a similar program where I can download photos and store them in folders on my computer. Then a program to retrieve them for processing. I don't like the idea of Adobe Photoshop where you have to rent the program and then store the finished pictures on their site.

check the software that comes with the camera, either on disk or at the mfg website for download. I know Canon supplies it on disk ,or for download.

Gene,

Part of the reason PS is so popular is because their are so many vocal advocates like yourself. People look at your work and think, wow, if I by that software I'll be a great photographer. It is a great program, but beyond the needs of many. All you have to do is read the questions that are asked so often to realize that a good percentage of folks using it don't have a clue. Not everybody is going to shoot and then turn an apparently under exposed image into a masterpiece. Speaking only for myself, CS5 does everything I want to do. I'd guess there are more like me than like you. Considering how long it has been since I paid for PS, I figure if I decided to go for the rental/subscription tomorrow I would be $$ ahead.

I do buy and use other programs, just for fun. I would say Paintshop and On1 would meet the needs of most non-professionals and many professionals.

Your work is terrific, the help you provide is terrific, but you often sound like a shill for Adobe.

IMHO of course.

Also Adobe products are difficult to learn and you have to pay to use them all the time. If you stop paying them, you no longer have the product to use(CC). Most photographers do not require photoshop. Way beyond what they need. I see this in camera stores as well. They try to sell you the most expensive thing on the market, and not the most useful item for your budget.

Photoshop Elements has an organize that is very similar to the one in Lightroom. The editor is pretty comprehensive and meets the needs of many photographers.

There is a free trial, just scroll to the bottom of the page.

Free software probably came with your camera. If you have Canon, download DPP from the Canon USA website. I think Nikon also provides free software.

I use FastStone to make folders and to move images from SD card to folder. Then I use Capture One to process the RAW images. Then I use Zoner Photo Studio to resize and sharpen. I use Amazon Photos for storage. I post images on 365project.org and sometimes on Instagram.

Irfanview. Free. Hardly any learning curve at all. VERY easy to use.. has everything but layers. Even has Gamma Correction, which few programs have.
With ANY program, make a folder in which to KEEP your originals and then make copies to edit. Do NOT edit the original. At some point you WILL be sorry if you do. Label your folders so it will be easy to find any photo any time.

GIMP - but has a menu learning curve.
Light Zone - Very nicely done.
Dark Table - another nice program
Fast Stone - another nice one.
If you use Mac, Phocus is pretty nice.

Not only are the above free, but they also include, at no extra charge, a learning curve.

If you have a Mac, try the resident PHOTOS app for camera exposure adjustments and Adobe Photo Elements for pixel editing.
