Does anyone have a recommendation for a program to download images from a CF card? I do not want to use Adobe Photoshop CC, so I need a similar program where I can download photos and store them in folders on my computer. Then a program to retrieve them for processing. I don't like the idea of Adobe Photoshop where you have to rent the program and then store the finished pictures on their site.

You don't have to store the finished pictures on their site.

You're mistaken about Adobe and the Creative Cloud, already noted.

Any modern operating system on your computer can read the CF card and copy the files onto the hard drive of your equipment.

Depending on your camera type, you might even have software that came with the camera to edit the image files. You can provide more details and / or investigate on your own.

GIMP - but has a menu learning curve.
Light Zone - Very nicely done.
Dark Table - another nice program
Fast Stone - another nice one.
If you use Mac, Phocus is pretty nice.

Not only are the above free, but they also include, at no extra charge, a learning curve.

Thank you for your information and advice. It's very helpful. Didn't know about storing the finished pictures.

It was so unfortunate that Adobe used that idiotic word CLOUD. Everything is on YOUR computer's HDD unless you want to use their cloud storage. Seems everyone provides some sort of could storage, Adobe, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, etc. Personally I use no cloud storage, but many major programs come as subscription services or only by subscription including MS Office Professional.

Yes, with Ps CC (or older CS6) you store your image files in folders that you can set up and arrange yourself. That is what I do. Or you can use Lightroom CC Classic and have your edits stored as a database and not even have to touch your image files. But Lr is not a pixel editor.

Where did you get that idea? The idea that you have to store the finished product on their site? That's total nonsense, doesn't exist!

Photoshop Elements has an organize that is very similar to the one in Lightroom. The editor is pretty comprehensive and meets the needs of many photographers.

There is a free trial, just scroll to the bottom of the page.

Common Lightroom misconception #1.

To address the question, look at ACDSee Pro or, if you value a LONG learning curve, Gimp.

The engineers at Adobe are without equal. The marketing people at Adobe are fools. Consider their fantastic Lightroom. It was first introduced as a standalone program called Lightroom. Then, it was renamed Lightroom CC. Then, they gave the name Lightroom CC to an inferior product, and renamed what had been known as Lightroom CC to Lightroom CC Classic. Got that? That what they pay Marketing big bucks for.

Photoshop/Lightroom is not a rental, it is a subscription, it has no equal in the industry, you don't need either or any other software to copy images from your card to your computer other than the native operating system, and the best in the business happens to be the programs you have ruled out without any rational basis for doing so. Over 9,000,000 users get it. Not exactly sure why you missed the point. Oh, and you don't store images on their site unless you really want to - all the images sit on your own computer and your drives. I think that before you dismiss something you really should have all the facts so that you can make an informed decision. And $120/yr is a bargain to keep your software current and functional. It used to cost over $1000 per release, and it was still an industry standard in spite of the price. It's only gotten much better since they adopted the monthly payment plan.

Gene,

Part of the reason PS is so popular is because their are so many vocal advocates like yourself. People look at your work and think, wow, if I by that software I'll be a great photographer. It is a great program, but beyond the needs of many. All you have to do is read the questions that are asked so often to realize that a good percentage of folks using it don't have a clue. Not everybody is going to shoot and then turn an apparently under exposed image into a masterpiece. Speaking only for myself, CS5 does everything I want to do. I'd guess there are more like me than like you. Considering how long it has been since I paid for PS, I figure if I decided to go for the rental/subscription tomorrow I would be $$ ahead.

I do buy and use other programs, just for fun. I would say Paintshop and On1 would meet the needs of most non-professionals and many professionals.

Your work is terrific, the help you provide is terrific, but you often sound like a shill for Adobe.

IMHO of course.

You don't really need extra software to move image files to your computer.
Simply create a new folder on the computer, name it, then copy-paste the image files from the card to the folder. Not only is it easy, fast and efficient, but you will also always know exactly where your images are.
