I am curious. Are you sure that you can only go to ISO 3200 with a single frame? The reason I ask is because I can go to 12,800 with my a580; 25,600 in multi frame. I also have only an optical viewfinder. Maybe the chemistry is different with the electronic viewfinder.

The camera will go to ISO 25,600. I meant that up to ISO 3200 the image noise is very acceptable. Even at 6400, it is not real bad.

I like that shot. It looks like something you spent a lot of time and skill putting together. It might not be technically "perfect," but it has a very nice, unusual look to it.

I want my cameras to do only one thing and that is to capture the best image possible of my subject. All the in-camera gadgets are just overhead and I can do without them. The Sony line has created some innovative bells and whistles but I'll stick with my Canon gear and turn to Sony when I want a TV.

I personally did not switch because of the bells and whistles, I switch because of 2 things. Sony/Minolta image quality is better than I was getting with my other gear, and the camera/lenses are much lighter. The color from the Minolta lenses is amazing, my partner even noticed the difference and she is color blind :D

Sony TV sales have been way down the last couple of years - losing them millions.

OK, how about if I need a robot? I think they make those. All kidding aside, I'm sure that Sony makes nice stuff but many people buy their gear because of brand identity. Most serious small format photographers stick with Canon/Nikon and although a small number of pros may use Sony, it's probably because they were comped the gear as a promotion.

There was a time when a friend asked me for advice on which P&S digital camera I would recommend. I said I would personally stick with Canon or Nikon. Armed with that advice they promptly went out and bought a Sony. When I asked why they chose that camera they would say that the guy at Best Buy recommended it. While traveling with that friend they informed me that they left their PC cable at home and asked if I could help get their shots off the camera. I said that I did not have the proprietary Sony PC/camera cable it used handy but might be able to read the memory card directly. Unfortunately I did not have a card reader that could read the proprietary Sony memory stick card. So unless Sony has moved into the world of standard USB cables and SD/CF memory cards I would scratch them off my list and that's my rub with Sony.

I am som what of a newbie but I am amazed you can put Minolta lenses on a Sony camera body. Is this by design or just a fluke?
No. It was quite intentional. When Sony bought Minolta, the bought everything, including the personnel from the R&D department.

The reason is that Sony bought Minolta. I still use a Dimage Z6 along with my Canon G12 ( Which I sold a Canon D1000 Rebel to get ) . But seriously considering an A65 with one Do It All Lens.
Just an idea; look at their 19-250mm lens for that purpose.

That is a mind-boggling act of stupidity on the part of the manufacturers. At one time, all cell phone makers were moving toward the standard USB connector, then they started drifting away. My son has two Samsung phones, and they take different connectors. My Nikons take different connectors, so I go on ebay and buy the cheapies from China. I can't see the sale of these cables being a money-maker for the manufacturers, so why don't they just standardize? Lack of standardization across the board must be costing a fortune on a national basis.

Every Canon I've owned (six P&S and five DSLRs) since 1999 have used a standard USB cable and SD or CF cards. The only proprietary cable that I've surrendered to is Apple's "i" device cable but only because every device it makes uses the same cable.

Thank you for the idea! I have a few Minolta lenses from my film days (used a Minolta XE7). The lenses have been gathering dust for years. A Sony body may be just the ticket! Nice testimonial!

There's a dead leaf right in the middle of the walkway. You couldn't remove that before taking the shot? FOR SHAME!

Thank you, for getting me to read reviews on the A57. Seems like the ideal camera for me.

According to wikipedia there are 2 disadvantages to the SLT camera

"1. Less light reaching sensor, due to portion of the light being reflected to phase-detection autofocus array (approximately 1/3 EV or 21% in current designs)."

2. Refresh rate limited by the time it takes the sensor to form an image; in low light this causes severe stuttering of the viewfinder image when panning (e.g. if it takes 1/4 sec for the sensor to gather enough light to form an image then the EVF updates at 4FPS).[citation needed]

Do you find these issuses a problem with your A57 ?

I was looking at the SLT-A35 early this year. My budget came up a bit short, so I got a refurbished Nikon D5000 instead. But I was really impressed by the Sony line. I have some old Minolta-mount lenses, but they would have to be used in manual mode. I'm thinking of picking up a $40 adapter and trying them out on the D5000.

This is a head to head comparison of the A57 and Canon 60D.

It's very informative; it looks like you got a heck of a camera

I use Canon for wildlife and Sony NEX for wide angle work ( with optical viewfinder ). Love the in camera HDR and panoram capabilities along with different lens possibilities with adapters !

Right! I think Sony is putting pano into just about all their cameras now. Why not? It's fast and easy. The only thing I don't like is that the camera decides when to stop shooting. I can still take separate shots and combine them with MS ICE.
