If as you say there was no light, what then is creating the shadows I can clearly see?

I am curious. Are you sure that you can only go to ISO 3200 with a single frame? The reason I ask is because I can go to 12,800 with my a580; 25,600 in multi frame. I also have only an optical viewfinder. Maybe the chemistry is different with the electronic viewfinder.

The camera will go to ISO 25,600. I meant that up to ISO 3200 the image noise is very acceptable. Even at 6400, it is not real bad.

All things are relative. "This is at night with NO light, just some small led yard lights and a street light about a block away."

Even is sony tv sales are down, they consistently get excellent reviews regarding color fidelity. Lower sales does not mean lower quality.

Thanks will do on the lens suggested . Gotta see what this 5500 mile trip I just got off of is gonna cost. Then pull the trigger on a good set up to go with my two high end point and shoots. The G12 View finder has no info on it. Sucks. The Z6 does but much slower when shooting on the move on a motorcycle. Miss many pics due to not being able to hold at 1/2 button for focus and shooting.

Sony uses the Konica Minolta mount for the lenses. The transition was as follows. Minolta merged (or was bought) by Konica to become Konica Minolta. Ultimately, Sony, in looking for a body/lens mount purchased Konica/Minolta to acquire a body/lens mount system. That transaction made the Sony cameras backward compatible to the old Minolta lenses. Since Minolta was one of the very first film SLR cameras to offer AutoFocus lens system, most old film SLR lenses from Minolta fit the Sony digital camera bodies, and make use of AF or MF.

Let me correct some of the information about Minolta lenses on Sony Alpha. Minolta lenses have three designations, MC, MD, and AF. Only the AF Minolta lense work directly with the Sony Alpha. MC and MD lenses will work with an adaptor only in manual focus.

I'm glad ypu cleared that up. I was worried there for a moment. Lol. Your night shot is a good test pic. I wish I was standing there with my camera also for a comparison. I think mine would have a lot more noise. However, the foreground bushes with my camera would probably show more detail than yours did in these exact same settings. I prefer your camera's trade off to mine.

For what it's worth, I understand that your camera, the a65 and the a77 are excellent when filming in movie mode in low light. I have tried the a77 movie mode in extremely low light conditions and I was blown away by its clarity. I have not tried the movie mode with my a580 in low light. Perhaps I should. I will have my camera a year in September and I don't think I have shot 3 minutes worth in movie mode.

Me too. I bought my Alpha 55 for stills. I have a dedicated little $175 shirt-pocket-sized full-HD 1080p 60-frame Sanyo Exacti for video and never really saw an advantage in filling SDHC cards with video in my Alpha 55. Maybe I'll try it just for grins to compare.

tainkc - do you have the Minolta 35-105 lens? if not, it is a must have. a wide to tele zoom that has 1 to 1 macro at 105, very nice and you can get one for about 100.00

I added a Minolta 28-100 for my Alpha 55 (45-160 in digital speak). $85 brand new still in the sealed box. Very nice.

Thank you, for getting me to read reviews on the A57. Seems like the ideal camera for me.

According to wikipedia there are 2 disadvantages to the SLT camera

"1. Less light reaching sensor, due to portion of the light being reflected to phase-detection autofocus array (approximately 1/3 EV or 21% in current designs)."

2. Refresh rate limited by the time it takes the sensor to form an image; in low light this causes severe stuttering of the viewfinder image when panning (e.g. if it takes 1/4 sec for the sensor to gather enough light to form an image then the EVF updates at 4FPS).[citation needed]

Do you find these issuses a problem with your A57 ?

No, I don't find any of those issues a problem. The camera is slow to save an image when taking a 3 or 6 frame HDR, but, heck, that saves me a lot of time in PP. The photos in jpg are wonderful, not sure using raw and post processing would be any better than what the camera decides.

I also just purchased a Minolta 28-100 lens (used) for my Sony a550 for $60. The lens is in mint condition and i carry my Sony more than my Nikon.
