I would include a visit to Terezin Concentration Camp if time permits. A very moving and educational experience. I, too, would skip the tripod. Never used one in Prague.

At the castle stop in to see the Cathedral (Svaty Vit). On your way down the hill to old town, meander through the streets before crossing back over the Charles Bridge. Stop and tour the "Old Jewish Quarter" making a point to see the Synagouge and the cemetery where they buried people 7 deep. There is a hotel with a rooftop outdoor siting area across from the Astronomical Clock - great place to take pictures of the clock as well as the Old Town Square. You may want to also stop in at the Tyn Church as well as the Praska Brana (Powder Gate). After Vienna, my favorite european city.

Prague is the only city were three Roma surrounded me on the subway tried to pick my steal my small point and shoot Cannon many years ago. But a friend of mine had his wallet stolen on the subway when we were in Rome. In both cases we were careless. Don't stand near the door! Prague is a great city to visit.

Prague was one of my all time best photo experiences. A wide angle lens is a must because of narrow streets around the castle, and inside churches. Cemeteries are really cool. There is the WW ll Terezin concentration camp which is a bus ride away that was incredible. A train ride gets you to Karlstejn Castle which is amazing. The contrasts between old and new, and effects of communist vs democratic governments, and the fact that Prague was almost untouched by WW ll bombing makes it a really interesting place to visit. Public transportation was very good. I was there in '94 not long after The Velvet Revolution and the effect of communism on the people was still evident, or seemed so to me. There seemed to be a lack of trust and openness. People on trains and buses rarely talked to me or each other. English was rarely spoken or understood. Just my experience, your's may be different as citizens have become more adjusted to the new government. I never felt unsafe and carried a backpack of medium format camera gear. The trains and stations reminded me of scenes from Doctor Zhivago, very primitive.

Re: pickpockets...I’m nearly your size, but it’s a direct attack you really need to worry about. We were in Naples a few years back. I was carrying my camera with my camera bag over my shoulder. We stopped at a cafe and took seats within an enclosed sidewalk area...heavy plastic sheeting. I put my camera inside the bag and set it on the seat next to me. We heard what appeared to be gunfire and looked around, but when I looked back at my bag, the clasps had been opened and the top was part way open...luckily, the camera and lenses were still there, but it was obvious someone had used the gunfire as a distraction and then reached from under the plastic wall to try to open and steal my gear. I was lucky, but it’s the guy who will slit your pocket or a purse, or pull your camera out a bus door and cut the strap to steal your camera that you have to be careful of. I’m sure you’ll be watchful and careful. Have a great trip.

Have a great trip, and, if you're a beer drinker, enjoy the local beers!

The first local beer I had was an original Pils at 11:00 AM on a Saturday morning as we first arrived in Prague (before the iron curtain was lifted - early 1980s). We had prepaid the room and breakfast but by that time all that was left on the buffet were onions, stale hard rolls. We took some of those and ordered a large Pils. It was served at the perfect temperature and was absolutely memorable. The rest of the trip not so much so since we always had to monitor our conversations in any locations, avoid the offers of illicit money changers, etc. Now it will be beautiful. Wish I could return.

Hello, I'm new to this site so I'm looking forward to learning from all of you. I'm traveling this summer to Prague and know it's a beautiful city to photograph. Can any of you inform me of any places, buildings, or unique things to photograph while there? I know about the Charles Bridge, the castle and the Old Town Square. Thank you for any help or guidance.

Take a day trip to Český Krumlov, about an hour and a half from Prague if you can. You won't be disappointed.

Go to a bar in the late afternoon, that has at least three Czech men inside. Ask them what the best beer is. Enjoy the show.
