Sorry, the reign of the DIGITAL DSLR is only beginning. Many, many, many, mirrorless owners are either switching back and buying the newest latest version DSLR. Sorry, you could not be more wrong. Women love the mirrorless cause it fits their hands better, but for big boys we like the DSLR, ESPECIALLY WHEN USING FAST LONG LENSES. Something mirrorless does not have. NOT ONE.

billnikon, pleas read above, look at the links and become educated. I have big hands and have no problems with smaller Sony Bodies. i have the extra battery grips and they will give any big-body camer lover the same feel if they need that. For me i don't use the grips that often, and have no issues. BTW I am 6 ft 4 in and 240 lbs.

Per your own link, it did horrible at the Kentucky Derby. And it seems to have only been used on remotes, and not panning across the track where the EVF would gag on itself.

This preference may last another generation, but some of the Sony cameras are as bulky as Canikons. Eventually people will relearn how to shoot two-handed, where balance is not a thing, because the left hand, not bulk in the body, offsets the lens. Before the Canon T90, the best SLRs were svelte.

Ironically, three years ago I switched from Canon back to Pentax, the one company showing no interest in MILC - see the DPReview interview with them
https://www.dpreview.com/interviews/3329510590/ricoh-interview-the-development-of-the-k-series-is-our-first-priority
but I have continued to follow Canon. When they first released their EOS-M system, they also released a full-function adapter
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/883406-REG/Canon_6098b002_EF_M_Lens_Adapter_Kit.html
Since so much functionality is lens-based in their systems, I believe the phrase fully compatible with all lens functions, including image stabilization and autofocus implies "full-functionality", but until now they hadn't had a body worthy of their EF lenses.

Thank You!

Had a friend who ran large data centers for a technology company; asked him mid-1999 what he was going to do (personally) to address the upcoming Y2K "crisis." He said that he would withdraw 1 months financial needs on 12/31 and that would see him through any issues until things got sorted out. As the year moved on, his projected cash needs diminished until on NYE, he withdrew enough pocket money for the evening.

I think I will worry about mirrorless and the demise of my beloved D700 when I see the absolute need to do so.

It’s fascinating to see “adult” boys trying to defend their toys, especially with the stories they come up with. Like yours. Did you think that you’d be taken seriously?

One person's observation/opinion here:

Being a Canon loyalist, I have thought that when the 5Dxxxx series was introduced, they have just about hit their peak. Short of the costly 1Dxx series, the 5Dxxxx's have about all the whistles and bells that one could expect on a DSLR. Where can they go from here??

With respect to all DSLR/camera manufacturers (Canon, Nikon, et. al.) it's time to make a new "mouse trap". Essential for corporation survival, and I fully respect that. I'm sure most or all of you would agree with that too. So, it begs the question: Where would a manufacturer move to, besides the DSLR? Mirrorless would be the smart choice. Keep in mind, I'm wearing an imaginary "corporate cap" as I type that. It is what I'd do if I were them.

My instinct a year ago told me to purchase a second 5DII body, so I now have two, to support my DSLR future. Oh, about the mirrorless? Thanks to the (current..past..?) Secretary of Homeland Security, when we traveled to Europe in 2017, he ""scared"" all of us into believing if we took something electronic bigger than a cellphone into the plane cabin, we would be stopped. So, dear UHH colleagues, I asked you all about a strong suggestion for a small mirrorless that also produced RAW with image quality. From all of your feedback, I purchased a Lumix TZ80, so I seem to already have my mirrorless to keep me as a "trendsetter" for 2019 and beyond.

Sorry for the length, but I've enjoyed helping other members here, as I have gained from help from other members too. And I thank Repleo for starting this thread.

Oman you are so wrong and know nothing about the shooting at the derby, Which I have done as well as at Belmont for two triple crown winners. EVF don't gag on any action. The A9 can focus and follow any action at 20fps, the A7RIII and A7III do just as well at 10fps. DSLRs don't have 93% focus point coverage, none. Beside all remote setups at the track are set to manual zone focus anyway and then secured and set off remotely. Mirrorless cameras are tracking and shooting fast action around the world. Get real!

Amen! Although adding a LCD to the D850 viewfinder would really be cool. It would make video shooting a lot steadier. Also you can zoom in to focus like in live view. The Angry Photographer says Nikon has the patents to do this. That is what I predict for the future of DSLR.

You can only see the real world through a DSLR eyepiece. If they go all LCD than you are seeing a JPG representation of world around you. LCD's are for video not photography. If they do this and stop making DSLRs than my old DSLRS will be priceless. And you thing DSLR are expensive now. Just wait and see what happens. If you want to see a video monitor eyepiece then buy a damn video camera!

If an image is well composed, no one is going to be interested in what type of camera was used.

The marketing folks at the major manufacturers are not sleeping. Many of the DSLR camera are well engineered and constructed and, contrary to some of the "mythology" will not unceremoniously drop dead or expire any time soon. So...they need to introduce new products and trends to stimulate interest and sales. There is nothing wrong with that- it's good strategy and economy. A the end of the day, the market will adjust to supply and demand. Perhaps some of the manufacturer's will lean in a certain direction but I don't see the elimination of the DSLR.

As it stands now, perhaps again, there are too many different models in all the major lines. How many different incarnations and features can be offered within essentially the same basic system before it gets cumbersome and confusing to even the most savvy consumer?

The DSLR will probably survive longer in the professional market that the amateur and consumer markets. Many professionals and advanced amateurs keep their high end equipment until it disintegrates as long as it serves their purposes. Some amateurs can be more fickle in the belief that a radical change of equipment styles might vastly improve their photography.

Serves all you high-end, high-bucks DSLR users right.
My Mighty Kodak Retinas still serve me well.
Of course, I don't do weddings, either.

I do dimly remember owning a Nikon 2020 and an F3, once upon a time.

Nonsense. You obviously have never used a Fuji, because the evf is the best thing about it.
