After giving the issue considerable thought, it occurs to me that the non-OEM manufacturers are stealing legitimate profits that belong to the camera manufacturers. You don’t like the cost of the batteries, buy a different camera. But you say all the manufacturers are over-charging? Take up knitting instead. How is this crime different than piracy of motion pictures or other art?

In piracy of a motion picture (or other art), someone is stealing what someone else made.

Buying a battery from a secondary manufacturer is no different that buying "store brand" at the grocery store instead of name brand.

As for the other wasabi, horseradish has the identical allyl isothiocyanates that clear your sinuses, but the "OEM" wasabi costs more too.

One thing to note, Nikon is starting to add to their firmware the ability to not allow off brand batteries to work with their equipment. One example, I have the Nikon D500 and it will not work with a 3rd party battery, so if you ever upgrade your camera body check the battery requirements before buying.

Not quite true that D500 won't work with 3rd party batteries. Some EN-NL15 batteries do not work with the D500. Nikon is willing to exchange the older ones that worked in the D750 with the newer ones that work on the D500. I have a promaster battery that I use with my D500 and it works fine. It just have to have an (N) after the EN-EL15

I have had no problems with off-brand batteries. Since “original brand” batteries cost sometimes three times as much as the off-brand ones, I assume the warnings about the off-brand guys are simply a marketing technique.

I bought an off brand for my Canon; it worked fine other than the charge not last as long as the OEM.

I use Vivatar batteries in my A6000. I got a charger which plugs into the wall and I got the charger, two batteries, and a European adapter and a car adapter all for $23 on eBay. They work great and hold their charge as long as the original single battery that came with my Sony and the Sony had no charger included except to plug in a usb cord straight into the camera. I was worried that charging the battery while it was in the camera might possibly lead to issues such as over heating etc so I think I got a pretty good deal. The plug in charger, two batteries and both adapters for half the price of a genuine Sony battery. I have also used offbrand batteries in my Olympus with no issues. Just my 2cents.

I can see no reason to trade in a battery other than it is wearing out and not functioning correctly.

Or you bought an extra battery for your camera, but changed to a different camera. Or got one as a gift and decided to sell as you don't need it. Or your camera failed and you bought a new one and decided to sell the extra battery.

Camera manufacturers got wise to competition and they programmed ways for the camera to stop when someone else’s batteries are used. Manufacturers of non-OEM batteries programmed ways to work around or circumvent any built-in restrictions the manufacturers installed. And so the back and forth battle goes. I have used non-OEM batteries in the past, but I will not do so again. After giving the issue considerable thought, it occurs to me that the non-OEM manufacturers are stealing legitimate profits that belong to the camera manufacturers. I have never heard such flawed economic reasoning! Stealing legitimate profits that belong to the camera manufacturers? So I guess you would never put an Interstate or Sears Die Hard battery in your Ford or Chevy automobile. And of course you would never hang a Tamron, Sigma or any other third party lens on your Canon or Nikon camera. Why that would be highway robbery!

A 3rd party battery won't damage your camera. The issue is that, over time, sometimes in as little as 6 months, they loose the ability to hold a charge for extended time. So you will not get anything like the battery life you do from an OEM battery.

ANY battery can damage your camera. If I put a Nikon battery into my Nikon camera and the battery damages it, Nikon will help me. If a third party battery damages my camera, I'm on my own.

Absolutely. We don't want to let a day go by without discussing that.

My real thought is whatever one is comfortable with.

I do not recall hearing anyone cite suffering any damage with different batteries. I never send a battery when I require warranty service.

LOL, makes me a participant in the thread, but seriously, everyone has the right to submit a query. I just wish, and I try to use the search tool, that it could be more functional and effective.

I use n9n OEM batteries in my D7100 all the time and never have an issue using them. Even if they only last for a year I can buy 3 for the price of one Nikon. Make sure you get decoded ones or they may not work. As far as used ones I would not even consider it.

Some people get too hung up on branding no matter the cost and in essence what you pay a premium for is the brand name and not the product itself.

My Nikon battery still works fine in my 10 year old camera. Reads as new. Battery is as old as the camera. To be fair so does the Duracell battery I bought to use in the grip with it. I would not buy another third party battery though, it's not worth the risk.
