I have heard that those pits on the face are used to detect heat coming from prey but they also estimate the size of the prey based on the heat signal. If it deems you too big to kill or eat it will not strike unless you practically step on it. In other words, they will strike only as a last ditch effort to get away.

I wouldn't rely on that advise. Every Moccasin I've ever seen was VERY aggressive. Most snakes will, if they see or sense you coming, will simply get out of your way, usually before you even see them. Not so with a moccasin. They are aggressive and will almost always stand their ground. It's unlikely Molly was really within striking range. She would have been hit if she was. They don't hesitate. They really do have a nasty disposition. When I was in High School we used to fish the Tamiami Canal in the same area where Molly lives and I can tell you there were plenty if moccasins there at that time (around 1948 - 1950). Back in those days even right in Miami you soon learned to shake your shoes out before you put them on in the morning. There were all sorts of critters around then.

I think you will find that most poisonous snakes have a triangular shaped head.

Looks venomous to me, though I can't identify it. All snakes are good swimmers. So what appears a water snake may actually be a land snake. If you saw it in or near ocean, it may be highly venomous for most of the sea snakes are highly poisonous. Please keep distance. Better to be safe than sorry.

Sorry about the IQ of the photos. I assumed at first that it was a Water Snake, but now I am wondering. It was about 4 feet long and heavy bodied. I am hoping that I wasn't stupid enough to get within striking distance of a Water Moccasin!!
Gutsy!

I was at a state park in north Florida, can't remember the name. I got a picture of a Coral Snake. We were standing about ten feet from it, and probably shouldn't have!

You never know! I thought that I learned my lesson. But last weekend, fstop22 visited and we were tromping through the swamps. I saw what I thought was a Eastern Hognose Snake and I was removing debris from around it so he could get a photo. It turned out to be a young Moccasin!
