Sorry about the IQ of the photos. I assumed at first that it was a Water Snake, but now I am wondering. It was about 4 feet long and heavy bodied. I am hoping that I wasn't stupid enough to get within striking distance of a Water Moccasin!!

Pit vipers are thick and heavy bodied, with triangular-shaped heads wider than their necks. They also have distinctive sensory pits located between the eyes and the nostrils, and their pupils appear as vertical slits.

All these characteristics are evident in your photos.
Here's a link to a photo of the head of a cottonmouth. It matches yours very closely.

I grew up in Mo., I've always heard that nonpoisonous snakes have a pointy head and tail and a rounded head and blunt tail was a poisonous snake.
