On a PC attach USB to lightning cable. If iTunes opens close it immediately or it might backup your iPhone automatically if you have it set to. Otherwise, you might get a popup that will ask you what you want to do with the files on your iPhone. You could select “open files,” or “transfer images to your computer.” If not, open a Windows Explorer window and look for your iPhone. You’ll only be able to see pictures on your iPhone when it’s connected this way.
I suggest you create a folder on your desktop. Then, click in the iPhone Window, touch CTRL + A then CTRL + C.
Finally, right-click in the new folder window and select “Copy here.”

Sounds more complicated than it is.
When I get in front of my computer I can detail the steps more accurately.
Need more help? PM me.

OK, I'm at my computer so I can be more accurate. I do not have iTunes set to SYNC automatically when I plug in my iPhone. So, when I do plug it in, a Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) window pops up and displays an icon with "Internal Storage." Double-click on this icon and you should see one or more sub folders that will contain your images.

This hasn't worked for me for some time. Apple won't allow an iOS device to show as an external drive, or so I thought. Do you update your software?

There are a few methods but "cloud" sharing works but really all that is a network share on somebody elses network. You can set up a network share on any folder on a pc or mac and access it from the iphone.

Seriously why would i want to take the time to upload 16GB of files from my phone or iPad to a server in Dublin or NewYork or where ever and then download 16GB of files to my Laptop / DeskTop when the laptop and Desktop are 8 feet away from each other. My lan is faster than my internet connection. If it wasn't my internet connection would be limited to the speed of my lan. not only is the upload much faster , there is no download the files are where I want them.

To setup a shared folder create or navigate to an existing folder right click the folder icon click on sharing and give it a share name for the iphone you just need the ipaddress of your laptop on the lan give it that (you may just be able to browse shares on your lan) the next thing you are asked for is your laptop username and password and there is your shared folder and you can upload and download as you please.
Cost nada zero and way faster than sending your files across the internet.

I use Dropbox. Every picture or video I take on my iPhone 6 is immediately transferred to my Dropbox account. It goes into the Camera Uploads folder on my desktop computer. It is immediate once I am connected to wifi.

For me and my Samsung Galaxy, it's Google Photos - same idea.

I have found the easiest way is to email them to yourself.

I hope by "all" that they just mean a couple.

For Mac users, "Image Capture" that's included free with MacOS is another option. There are a few preferences to streamline importing. Example: Open "Image Capture" when you plug in the iPhone. The "Autoimporter" option could be handy for some.
Sort photos/movies by name/kind/date, etc.
Select, drag & drop the photos/movies you want to import to the folder(s) you want at USB2/3 speeds. (With many other transfer options you're limited by your wireless speed.)
Google for info. Example: http://www.macworld.com/article/2867001/exploring-the-many-miracles-of-image-capture.html

If you have a 'current' Mac, then use AirDrop. On your iPhone, open Photos and go to your 'Camera Roll' album. Open and 'Select' the photos you want transfer. At the bottom left of the screen you will see a rectangular box with a centered arrow pointing up. Click on that box. The next screen will show you options, but the top section will say AirDrop. Have your Mac opened and on. In a moment the AirDrop icon on your iPhone will change to your computer's name. Tap on it. A screen will pop up on your Mac telling you that AirDrop is receiving files. These are usually found in your 'Downloads' folder. You can now import these into whatever photo editing software you use.
Special note about Dropbox....Yes to what has been said before. This is a good option. But keep in mind that the files uploaded to DropBox...also download to your desktop and hard drive IF you have a folder on your desktop. This takes up a lot of space on your HD if you are downloading large files. So be constantly aware of the space available on your HD. Of course, DropBox also has size limitations based on your subscription.

There’s a great little app (for Android or IPhones) called PhotoSync that automatically looks for new images and copies them to a designated folder on your PC or Mac.

Costco has a thumb drive that you can plug into your iPhone/iPad and copy all of your photos/videos onto it. When done, slide the nob on top to the left and a standard USB will slide out to plug into your laptop/desktop. This USB device is 128GB and costs $49. Make sure you get the one for Apple because they also have one for Android - they look identical.

Besides the built in Apple programs there are a number of third-party programs available for a nominal price that will do the job. Do a Google search.

If you have a Bluetooth enabled Mac, the easiest way is to air drop the files. Just search for air drop.

That is a good question. I'm looking forward to reading through the answers. As computer literate as I am, I've never seen a more seemingly complicated, convoluted system as that which Apple has for transferring files from one product to another.

Depends. The photos app is idiot proof for this. But you do need to one make sure you have the storage, and two make sure your non Apple computer, if you have one, can handle it. My base Windows laptop cannot, and seemingly times out before getting very far.

My better half has a iphone 5 - refuses to use any online services to download photos.

So I just take the USB charging cable and plug it into my windows laptop.

Windows opens it as ext drive - iphone displays a message to approve this connection - approve it.
Then open the drive on your laptop/pc -BAM- PICTURE folder is there and ready to copy over - fast too
