If only interested downloading when I use a PC, I just plug it into the USB port and it's seen as an external drive. When I use my MacBook, I can use "Image Capture" which comes with OS X. If using OS X, for both downloading and uploading, I use iMazing, which is very good but it's not free.
A product named syncios will recognize almost any phone when plugged into your pc and will allow you to upload and/or download video, music....etc

And if you have Windows, it includes automatic photo transfer. Just plug the phone in, and it does the rest. No other application needed either way.

"iMazing" is quite powerful. Among other things, it allows direct access to individual folders of iOS apps on the iPhone assuming the app's developer has turned on file sharing.

True, but I then how do you get the photos from PHOTO to Photoshop?
On a MAC you and also use Air Drop. It is on your finder menu.

When I transfer photos off my wife's iPhone onto my windoze system, I just use a cable and mount the phone as an external device. Then I go in through the file exploder and copy off what I want to where I want. No fuss no muss.
On my IPhone I have an App "One Drive" which is Windows based and part of the Windows I Cloud. My photos are automatically loaded onto "One drive" which is also on my computer. Once there I delete the photos from the IPhone Photo App. It works real well. For example, if you took photos early today with your IPhone and that evening you went onto your computer and open the file "One Drive" you would find the photos you took earlier that day. The only requirement for "One drive" is internet access to allow the transfer. This App works with pictures and videos.

I did that with my Android and Windows phones, but I couldn't get it to work for iPhone.

And if you have a PC the Photos app in Windows will do the trick with the Apple Camera Adapter, which is about $30.
Not sure why because I have been doing this since my IPhone 6 and I now have an IPhone 8. Have you opened your One drive, clicked on photos and then onto Camera Update. Also on the bottom of the One drive App on your phone you will see, Files, Photos, Recent, Shared and Me, click on Shared and you should see Links Onedrive to me. If you don't see that then you need to create that link.
I use Photosync to transfer back and forth between all my Apple devices. This works seamlessly and very very fast.
