thanks

I've had a G12 for more than a year and 4000+/- shots and have no regrets. My previous camera was a Canon S70 so staying in the "family" made the learning curve easy.

My single complaint is that the camera is a bit large when stuffed in my rear pants pocket. It'll fit in a jacket pocket easily so in cooler weather the size isn't a problem.

The camera take great pics, even on "Auto". Have only missed the capabilities of my SLR on rare occasion (depth of field control, speed are not as good as an SLR). The G12 is the only camera I use now and I carry it almost all the time. I never did that with the SLR and that caused me to miss lots of photo opportunities.

The Canon S100 has similar capabilities in a much smaller package but without an optical viewfinder and hot shoe.

I also forgot to mention that the G12 is a perfect camera for big hands- like mine!- and the solid build helps keep it steady when shooting. I find it really comfortable to hold and handle. The articulating LCD is great for close ups
in awkward places and protects itself when closed. Another very useful feature which I often use is the exposure dial on the top left hand side. It makes all the difference when
taking eg a white or blue flower - just turn the dial down to get good exposure and colour.

I am a Canon shooter and have been for some time, film to digital, and recently bought the G12 as my carry along camera. It beats lugging my 50d and 7d. I keep it in my brief case or even in my pocket. I got a great deal from B & H. Well under the asking prices. He won't be disappointed. Forget about the 200mm. Canon is coming out with an upgrade to the G12 so prices should be coming down on the G12.

I have a G12 as a P&S camera even though my real cameras are Nikon. I like itenough to lend it to my ex-wife for our daughter's forthcoming wedding. Make what you will of that.

But with that Nikon, you are sacrificing image quality. I would walk around a whole pile of Nikons and that 200mm zoom, to buy a G12. Nikon may make a good DSLR, but their P&S technology is in the stone ages.

I have bee a nikon shooter all my life. You are right. "Stone Ages"might be an exaggeration but Nikon has a way's to go with their small cameras. I have a L120 that sucks. I would go with Canon. That will be my next point and shoot.

I too have the L120 and am less than happy with it and as such, purely as a back up have been looking at the SX40

I owned a G5 for over 5 years and decided to replace it with a G12 just over a year ago. The G5 was an excellent camera and the G12 is even better. I cannot imagine that you would be disappointed if you decide get the G12 for your son. I frequently carry mine on holidays in preference to my SLR – the smaller sensor is very good and the only downside is the slight shutter lag for certain shots, but this could be much more of a problem with other models of compact cameras.

the G12 is my main camera... it replaces a Nikon D1x and D2x that I was using to create virtual tours (primarily real estate)... it blows the old Nikons away, and I carry it everywhere... it even has a rudimentary HDR mode!

Don't think you would regret getting an SX40, unless you want to wait and check out the SX50 that is 'supposed' to come out sometime this fall .......

I own the G-12 and it is a great camera the lends itself to learning photography and not just taking snap-shots. I always carry it with me in my car as well as on trips and it's my walk around camera. I could use any one of a number of DSLRs I own but I like the G-12. I print 13X19 prints often from images taken with that camera. I like the articulated LCD but most important is the eye level view finder. Controls are easy to access and it's well built. If it weren't for the eye level finder, I'd say look at the Canon SX260. Another good camera, although larger, is the Fuji EX30. Same price (approx. $400.00) has an eye level finder, 30X lens and has a lens focus ring as well as a lens zoom ring on the lens! My best (and I hate decisions as well) J. Goffe and remember the f/stops here!

He can't be serious in getting into photography if his best aspiration so far is to use a disgusting cell-phone. He doesn't deserve a Canon G12 yet. Don't spoil him. Get him something P&S in the interim & wait till his next birthday to see if he matures.
