This statement by your friend does not make much sense to me at all. If you know how to use each camera and its features you should be able to get good shots with either camera. I can see were the high resolution of the D850 could cause some issues if you are not shooting with high quality lenses and proper technique. My point is that you can basically use the D850 to achieve the same resolution as the D500 in DX mode...at least from what I have read. Full disclosure...I am a Canon shooter...

Best,
Todd Ferguson

A friend of mine that owns the D500, D810 and D850 just sent me an email saying the following regarding the D850:

"Don't get the D850. It is harder to use, gets fewer in focus shots, but when it does grab focus the shots are incredible. I think the D850 works best on a tripod with a 500mm f4 prime, a 10k lens. Not saying the D850 is a bad camera because it isn't, it just isn't as easy to use as the d500."

Steve,
A great review. You answered all my D500 questions eloquently, even the ones I didn't know I had. I will definitely subscribe.
Thanks

Look at Steve Perry's review. I have had mine for a year now and I love it. I use it as much or more than I use my D5.

I have had one for about a year and it is superlative. I use mine for wildlife and have a Nikkor 300mm f4 PF VR + TC14EIII, a Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6 and a Sigma 180mm f2.8 macro + 1.4 TC. It is a fantastic camera for wildlife and sports. Prior to my D500 I owned a Canon 7D mark II and in my hands I can honestly say the D500 is the better camera. The only criticism I have is that there are no presets as there are on my Olympus EM1 mark II.

I have owned the D500 for a bit over a year. I have not found anything not to like. I consider it a baby brother of the D5 in DX format. Very versatile and, IMHO, easily Nikon's absolute best DX camera. Best of luck.

I am not trying to high jack this thread, I have read some things from your site , I know no other way to ask you a question , own a d810 65 years old been in photography since 1970 looking for imput on a 16-35 vr , 17 - 35 2.8 ,can't really afford the 14 - 24 unless used ...how can I message you ...on this subject of landscape , I print large on a canon ipf 8300 . Stitched panos ..

I've owned the 17-35 and it is an exceptionally good lens. I sold it when I added the 14-24 and the 24-70. All of those lenses are superior. You won't go wrong with any of them, IMHO. Best of luck.

I have the D500 and use it in my DayCare business as well as for family and nature. I have found it to be a great camera. It is heavy, but the design fits my hands perfectly and I really don't notice it. Many of my pictures are indoors of young children in action and I have added a SB400 flash which I keep on it when I'm indoors. Combined with the Nikon 24-120 4G which is the lens I keep on it almost all the time and the SB400 flash it yields perfect results. The camera is also quite capable in video mode and the tilt screen comes in very handy. (The 24-120 is equivalent to 36-180 so is a bit limiting on the wide end, but the results have made it worthwhile to adapt too.)

Every so often I learn something on this site I should have known all along but did not. And the information is very useful. Here's but one example: "all three take the same battery".
I own the D7100, D500 and D810. The fact they all take the same battery had somehow eluded me and I can see where knowing that little fact could come in handy some day. As for the D500, it's a fabulous camera. I would buy it again.

The D500 has a different remote shutter input, different viewfinder (round), and takes XQD cards and SD cards. The XQD cards are fast, but expensive. And currently only made by Sony. Lexar cards have been discontinued, but there are rumors they will be back. I ordered one from Adorama, which went on back order the day after I ordered it. Thanks, Adorama. Ever hear of computerized inventory control?

The D500 is big...bigger than my D750. I haven't tried video on mine yet; it does shoot 4k, but has the 30minute recording limit.

I use a right angle viewfinder, so I had to buy the DR-5 for round viewfinders.

The kit lens for the D500 is the 16-80 f/2.8-4. That's comparable to the 24-120 f/4 that came with the D750. Very good lens, and I recommend it. But I usually use the 24-120 on my D7100 with the 70-200 or 200-500 on the D750. I haven't settled on where the D500 fits in yet...I did get it mostly for wildlife and sports. Shot some eagles with it; haven't tried any sports yet.

I just got the D500, used it yesterday for the first time. I also have a D750 and a D700 (which I am selling). It was very fast focusing, I got sharp images. I did find it was a bit noisy at iso 800. I also found there isn't as much room to crop as there is on a full frame camera. I do a lot of wildlife photography, for that I think it is the perfect camera.
Here are a few images I took yesterday.

I agree with you 100%. I also own the D500 and have been using it for a bit over a year. As with ANY Crop Sensor camera, it does have a bit more noise than a FF when you go up in ISO. For football under the lights, I shoot at up to 12,800 ISO and get decent results though I do prefer my D5 in this situation. I think you're going to really enjoy this camera as it has many features inherited from the D5 that will be very useful for BIF. Best of luck.

P.S. Your images are awesome!

I asked Nikon to send me one for my China trip this year because I didn’t want to carry my full frame gear. I loved it so much, I purchased one when Nikon had the free battery grip deal.
