A friend of mine that owns the D500, D810 and D850 just sent me an email saying the following regarding the D850:
"Don't get the D850. It is harder to use, gets fewer in focus shots, but when it does grab focus the shots are incredible. I think the D850 works best on a tripod with a 500mm f4 prime, a 10k lens. Not saying the D850 is a bad camera because it isn't, it just isn't as easy to use as the d500."

I found the complete opposite to be true: I shoot with the D850 and the Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2. It's very fast focus, and I never miss a shot because of focus. Never used a tripod because I don't use a 500mm lens and the Tamron VR works great.

I also own the D500 and it is not any easier to use than the D850.

I purchased D500 about one year ago. I likely do not optimize thecamera’s best shooting subjects - sports and wildlife, but I do photograph 7 young grandchildren. I cannot give you technical reasons why I love the camera. The shutter release is so fast. Great camera!

Thank you all for your thoughts & opinions. To be more specific I’m curious if any of you have used the 500 with any of the older pro grade AFS primes. I own some but not any of newer generation without the aperature rings. My favorite being the 300 AFS which would be great for wildlife on the 500 body. At least so goes my thought process.

My first DSLR was a Nikon D80. Worked fine, but lacked good low light performance. Bought the D500 for high ISO capability and its 10 frame/sec burst mode that I wanted for indoor sports photography (grandson is HS placekicker; great for getting the right shot in fast moving play)

I have used it for night football with a Nikon 28-300 zoom. Shot in A priority mode, f/6.3, and ISO 5000 to get shutter speed to 1/640; mostly at max zoom. Great shots last Friday at Indianapolis Lucas Oil Stadium (dome) for HS state championship game. Motion frozen, no blur!

Not yet tried it for other photo ops. Fantastic performance and results so far. Great camera--everything I could ever need. Highly recommend it.

I have used my D500 with all of my lenses, including some of the older D versions (without the built-in focus motor). I've used my 300/4 PF on my D500 with wonderful results, along with my 70-200/2.8E FL. I would have no hesitation using an older 300/2.8 AF-S, but I have never used mine on it and I recently sold my 300/2.8 AF-S. The D500 makes a fine sports camera, second only to the D5 and perhaps the D850, but the jury is still out on that one. Best of luck.

I'd be interested to hear opinions, good or bad, of anyone who owns & uses a D500. I'm considering that so real life impressions would be useful. Thanks in advance.

Love the camera, does a great job with fast moving subjects; no complaints from me.

Great camera. I also have a D750 and D7100. At least all three take the same batteries.

The D500 has a different remote shutter input, different viewfinder (round), and takes XQD cards and SD cards. The XQD cards are fast, but expensive. And currently only made by Sony. Lexar cards have been discontinued, but there are rumors they will be back. I ordered one from Adorama, which went on back order the day after I ordered it. Thanks, Adorama. Ever hear of computerized inventory control?

The D500 is big...bigger than my D750. I haven't tried video on mine yet; it does shoot 4k, but has the 30minute recording limit.

I use a right angle viewfinder, so I had to buy the DR-5 for round viewfinders.

The kit lens for the D500 is the 16-80 f/2.8-4. That's comparable to the 24-120 f/4 that came with the D750. Very good lens, and I recommend it. But I usually use the 24-120 on my D7100 with the 70-200 or 200-500 on the D750. I haven't settled on where the D500 fits in yet...I did get it mostly for wildlife and sports. Shot some eagles with it; haven't tried any sports yet.
Great camera. I also have a D750 and D7100. At l... (show quote)

I have the same three cameras and since I got the D500 have shot about 10,000 photos with it, mostly birds. Very happy with it. It's not really bigger than the D750, just slightly different proportions and about the same weight. My 300mm f4 E VR PF lives on the D500. With or without a Nikon 1.4 III TC an ideal combination for hand held wildlife or sports. I can go further: until something better comes out, the ULTIMATE combo for hand held wildlife and sports.
