I'd be interested to hear opinions, good or bad, of anyone who owns & uses a D500. I'm considering that so real life impressions would be useful. Thanks in advance.

I've only had mine since April but love it. It's fantastic for birds and wildlife but also great for scenery and architecture. I took it and my D7000 to Europe this fall. Hardly put anything on the D7000 (2,335) but 13,970 on the D500. I strongly recommend it.

I really like mine. I think it's one of the best cameras made by NIKON and definitely the best DX camera. See Steve Perry's review.

I really like my D500. Not only is it great for wildlife but I also use it for studio photo shoots. The dedicated joystick is great for that. I put the camera in single point autofocus. I use the joystick to keep the focus point on the model's face. I like that they finally figured out a good location for the ISO button. It's right behind the shutter button. I found out that the video record button can be re-programmed to execute Mode. If you don't shoot video you might try that. Mode is in the group of four buttons on the top left of the camera but it's easier to use the re-programmed video record button for that. It also has an Fn1 and Fn2 (function) button that can be programmed.

Great camera. I also have a D750 and D7100. At least all three take the same batteries.

The D500 has a different remote shutter input, different viewfinder (round), and takes XQD cards and SD cards. The XQD cards are fast, but expensive. And currently only made by Sony. Lexar cards have been discontinued, but there are rumors they will be back. I ordered one from Adorama, which went on back order the day after I ordered it. Thanks, Adorama. Ever hear of computerized inventory control?

The D500 is big...bigger than my D750. I haven't tried video on mine yet; it does shoot 4k, but has the 30minute recording limit.

I use a right angle viewfinder, so I had to buy the DR-5 for round viewfinders.

The kit lens for the D500 is the 16-80 f/2.8-4. That's comparable to the 24-120 f/4 that came with the D750. Very good lens, and I recommend it. But I usually use the 24-120 on my D7100 with the 70-200 or 200-500 on the D750. I haven't settled on where the D500 fits in yet...I did get it mostly for wildlife and sports. Shot some eagles with it; haven't tried any sports yet.

Check out this link...

I have a tendency of doing the wrong thing in order to check the camera limits. This is what I did when I purchased the D500.

I sold my D810 and for 5 months shot with the D500 and the Nikon 24-85 f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens. I enjoyed the camera and took many photos with it. I would probably still use it exclusively, but I had a GAS attack and bought the D850.

When I go out to shoot I use the D850 with the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 about 98% of the time. The other 2% of the time is with the D500 and the Tamron SP 70-200MM F2.8 Di VC USD G2.

If you decide to purchase the D500, you will not be disappointed, it is a great camera !!
