I have read that Affinity works beautifully with a Mac. Have any Mac users had experience with this software and how it compares with light room?

So I guess we should get in the habit of converting manufacturer raw files to dng when the manufacturers push out a new raw format.[/quote

One of the problems with DNG files is that they are double the size of RAW (CR2) files
The opposite happened with a Lumix GX85 file I just ran through the Adobe DNG converter, selecting to include the Full size JPEG and the Fast Load data. The RW2 file out of the camera is 19.8MB while the DNG file is 16.4MB. (Choosing Medium size JPEG and omitting the Fast Load data, the DNG file is only 14.4MB.) I can't see a difference when I blow each of 'em way up in LR.

Now if you make the selection that includes the original raw file in the DNG file, so that the original raw camera file can be extracted later, THEN the DNG balloons to 35MB. But that's the result of a choice to save two files, not the DNG conversion process.

I see just the opposite - my CR2 files are larger than the resulting DNG files that I convert to after import into Lightroom. Perhaps you are also saving the raw file inside the converted DNG? THAT would indeed double the size.

I shot Nikon raw for about 5 years - always converted to DNG in Lightroom - always saw a space savings with no loss of data, now shooting Canon I see the same space savings and again, no loss of data.

Affinity Photo works well on Macs, Windows PCs, and iPad Pro, according to the reviews I've read and people I know who use it.

The Affinity Photo app works more like Photoshop than Lightroom. It can pair well with Apple Photos as its image database. But its primary use is as a pixel-level editor.

If you go to the Serif web site and scroll ALL the way to the very bottom of the Affinity Photo page, you should find a link to the 30-day free trial version...

Blood sucking? Isn't that a bit extreme? What else do you willingly spend $10/month on without complaining about blood sucking? The Happy Meal @ McD's? A coffee and doughnut at a diner?
A Latte @ Starbucks?

Bottom line is, Lightroom is the gold standard for photo editing. Everything else is just a less capable copy.

I agree! For the editing and cataloging power offered in the CC suite $10 a month is not outrageous, in fact for the capability I get, I feel like it's a bargain. How many folks spend far more than that per month just to access the internet so we can type our replies on the UHH?

All of the software producers are moving to this sort of plan. Microsoft office is packaged as an annual plan that gives you all of the programs, and cloud storage. So far I have been happy with the MS package, not yet started the Adobe package, will need to study it more. I have not really ventured into much post processing. So far I have been happy with the free software from Nikon and MS (photos) which have been adequate for me o fix any problems that I have had with my photos, but then again, I really am not fond of the overly-"corrected" photos I seem to see more and more of these days.

DOBE used to be at Photo Expo in New York. They stopped that because of the raw tomatoes. Now you throw your tomatoes into the cloud. Try it! You will like it!

It looks like the trend is moving toward Subscription Software (Ransomware) . I predict, in a few years, most top level application software and all Operating Systems will be via subscription only.
The companies are going this route because it is to their advantage to do so. It gives them a solid base of almost guarantied cash flow from which to work without the need for new sales. It also gives them much greater control over the use of their software by the consumer.

Here is what I don’t like about the ‘Ransomware’ business model as a consumer.
It forces me to accept possible unwanted updates and changes to the way the program looks and feels. This means I will always be behind the learning curve or a feature I like might be removed against my wishes.
It costs me each month, weather I use the software or not.
As a very light user(once every few months), I am forced to subsidies the mega-user who uses the program every day, all day long. (My computer has a good number of programs I have used only once in several years and some I will use only if required, due to a problem.)
It tends to lock me in to using only that software and therefore subjects me to creeping increases to the monthly rate; and other whims and abuses by the provider, over which I have no control.
In the long-run, cost/use will be higher for me; especially if it sets on my computer for a long time.

So which is it?

That they are free to do what they wish with their product or that they are abusing their position? You can't have both.

You may not LIKE what they do...but that's a subjective thing.

So, don't convert, just copy. Lightroom reads Nikon NEF and Sony ARW files without converting to DNG.

So what did they do to LR to make it so different than LR6, other than give you LR mobile? and make the catalogs incompatible?

I use MS Photo which works pretty well for what I have needed on jpgs. I have used Photo Explosion which has much more power. Sometimes it opens Nikon .nef files fine, at other times they open, but weird results.

OMFG, it's 2017. You subscribe to a local newspaper? You pay a monthly fee for internet access? You do it all the time for much, much more than $10/month. The nice thing about Lightroom is, once you get comfortable in your workflow, you can leave all the new gadgets alone until you have a situation where it will make a difference.

I guess change is hard for some folks.
