Today Adobe released some new pricing plans around Lightroom.

Buried in the byzantine details, is that Adobe is phasing out Lightroom standalone. :-(

Here are a few links:

https://www.cnet.com/news/adobe-lightroom-cc-faces-an-uphill-climb-photoshop-2018/

Looks like they still have the $10 a month plan, and they rolled out a new $20 a month plan -- the main addition for the $20 plan appears to be 1TB of cloud storage for that extra $10.

Personally -- I'm glad I'm not an Adobe user, plenty of great alternatives that are almost as good and way, way less expensive . It's only going to get worse going down the road. My prediction is that in two years or less the $10 a month plan will be the $11.99 or $12.99 a month plan.

It will be a while before we know the facts about this change. Some articles say LR6 will continue to be sold. Some mention LR7, with the stand-alone versions being call "Classic" now. Whatever changes Adobe has made, they will not prevent me from continuing to use LR6 and then buy something else when that stops working.

I would have no problem processing if my Adobe products stopped working today. I already have others - Affinity, ON1, etc.

I guess that is going to suck for many UHH Lightroom fans. I use Ps CS6 and ACR for most of my PP needs. For now. Eventually I will want the newer features of Ps CC and succumb to the monthly subscription plan. $10/month is cheap compared to my FiOS bill! At one time Photoshop was upwards of $800 I believe! Though, I think I have the newest Pentax camera (K-3) I can have with out a problem with its PEF RAW into ACR 9.1.1. A Pentax K-3ii would be problematic. Otherwise, next camera DNG RAW only.

The "bloodsucking" will continue as long as you want it to.Your choice. No is an answer.

Blood sucking? Isn't that a bit extreme? What else do you willingly spend $10/month on without complaining about blood sucking? The Happy Meal @ McD's? A coffee and doughnut at a diner?
A Latte @ Starbucks?

Bottom line is, Lightroom is the gold standard for photo editing. Everything else is just a less capable copy.

I can think of about 8 graphic services wanting $10.00 a month with about 20 that I ignore.

If do not like Adobe, don't use it or buy it. You still have choices, but don't complain when the others do not work together or one of them just drops out of existance.

That is a crippling move. I used all those tools, especially the tone curve quite often. Practically every decent PP software package has a Tone Curve feature, even free ones like Canon's DPP. So they apparently have dumbed it down so we would have to use PS more then we do now. Most people who use both almost always indicate that they do well over 90% of their processing in Lightroom and the remainder in PS. I guess Adobe is attempting to change the mix. So forget the pricing options and the lack of a standalone. That may be the least of it. Its the functionality that I'm most concerned about. After reading CNETS artice it look like even the "Classic" version may be short lived. It's really too bad. Lightroom was a great tool.

I read the article a bit differently. The "classic" version preserves tools such as the tone curve, panos, and HDR merge. The "new CC" is a simplified Lightroom whose main intended primarily for cell phone users and low volume users who do not typically store their images on computer hard drives. This article by Matt Kloskowski is a good summary. https://mattk.com/lightroom-cc-is-now-lightroom/?mc_cid=3947b65c42&mc_eid=4b55afb9d7 In short, the Lightroom that we know is intact and had some of its features enhanced.

Well, you do not need to change to LRCC just stay with LR Classic which has all those tools and more. I personally do not need to work on my images on all my mobile devices

Anyone who thinks that paying $10 a month for a powerful toolset like Lightroom and Photoshop has never been in the software business. Software is a very hard business to make money in, especially long term. Personally I spend more money on a lot of things each month that are less important to me than my photos and managing and editing them. I am sure most people on this forum do too!!!

I you don't want to participate on the Adobe environment there are many alternatives. Nobody is forcing anyone to choose Adobe.
This whole discussion gets very old very fast...

Best,

Anyone who has used a computer for any length of time should be wise enough to understand that eventually the computer and the software running on it will become unusable. I feel this happens faster on windows machines vs Macs but it eventually happens to every machine and the software it runs. So, if you think you are going to run a purchased version of Lightroom or anything else for the next 10-20 years I guess you are kidding yourselves. How many of you are still using Windows 95 every day or even every week?

Best,
Todd Ferguson

Adobe Camera Raw which is the processing engine both in Photoshop and Lightroom. The interfaces are different in Photoshop than in Lightroom, and I personally prefer Lightroom's interface in the develop module

I remember when Adobe bought out Rawshooter, which they tweaked and brought out as Lightroom... I loved the old Rawshooter from Pixmantic... Time marches on...
