The manufacturer of my sports car recommends that I use the high octane gas, but I think it runs just as good on low octane. Maybe even better. Saving a lot of money...

Odd I thought this thread was about camera batteries. But since you have introduced internal combustion engines to the topic, I have one question of you. The manuf. recommend octane above XX because the manuf. wants you to spend more money on gas or because the manuf. wants to you to avoid pre-ignition and a shortened engine life?

Sorry you are unable to comprehend the analogy.

All is good. I doubt any of us will change our mind from our current practices. I'm betting that many of us rarely by more than one a year and some less than that.

You have a top of the range Nikon costing best part of £2000 and you're looking at saving a couple of pounds on a cheap battery? I paid around £800 for my D7200 and have a spare NIKON battery to back up the NIKON battery that came with it. Why pay for quality and back it up with cheapo accessories?
Each to their own I suppose.

I have 3 EN-EL14 batteries I was using on my Nikon D3300. Will not work on my 3400. Have no use for them. They worked great for me. Anyone have a use for them? I don't remember what I paid for them less than a year ago. Seems like $70.

What did you do with your D3300?

Have used third party batteries (wasabi) for my D7000, but these will not work with my new D500. Are there any third party (read cheaper) EN-EL15 batteries that will work in the D500?

Sorry I'm late to this party, but I didn't see any definitive reply. I purchased my D500 from B&H and it came with a "free" spare Watson EN-EL15. It works fine.

Used 3rd party batteries for years, with no problems. I really don't think that you are risking your camera.
They are all probably made in the same factory in China anyway.

I fell in the bay off of a boat. Ugh! The Nikon batteries seem to hold a little longer charge. I wanted spares for when on sailboat for several days & no way to charge them til I get home. Thanks.

These recent posts have moved off-topic -- the OP's issue is specific to D500 firmware which apparently requires a logic chip in the battery. The OP has an older battery that lacks that chip. I responded that the new Watson EN-EL15 has it and works fine with the D500 -- I suspect most reputable third-party battery companies now have the necessary chip.

Here's a more relevant older thread on the topic: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-389012-1.html
