I have three Nikons that all use the EN-EL15 battery, one of which is the D500. I have a Watson battery that was a freebee from B&H with one of my cameras and has seen a lot of use,but the D500 does not recognize it. I think somebody else may have reported this as well.

The D500 requires full communication with the battery, the Watson battery does not have the upgraded chip necessary to communicate with the newer technology, nor do most of the aftermarket batteries have this ability. Eventually they will catch up.

This was discussed within the past week or so. The same results came with the Wasabi battery too. I'm sure Watson and Wasabi will have a cure soon. Most likely they will be made to specify D500, because the present ones work in other Nikon cameras. I use Nikon and Watson/Wasabi batteries. For now you will have to dish out some extra bucks for the Nikon Brand.

I believe the EN-EL15 battery that comes with the D500 has been upgraded

Yes. Like the chip in most ink cartridges, the chipped battery seems to be a growing trend - until the aftermarket catches up. I had that problem with a Sony camcorder, but now the generics work fine.

Does it not work to power the camera at all, or does it just not show the battery info?

If the former it seems another case of Nikon screwing the customer to try and ,ake a few extra $. When will they ever learn?

See thread on Nikon failing.

The most current information you can find on the Nikon D500 is on Thom Hogan's site. He is following the battery issue in great detail.
